How do you figure? 33% is taken throughout the lifetime of the individual if it's pure income, 20% is taken if it's capital gains. You've experienced it yourself, you know plenty of old money types who go into government service or who choose to work in NPOs and other things that don't generate income for them.

The single greatest hedge against dominance by one sector of the gene pool is simple inflation. Inflation is far more effective than a 50% death tax simply because no matter how much money a person generates in his lifetime, if his offspring decide to rest on his laurels and not earn any income of their own, the real wealthy they possess constantly diminishes. I mean one hundred years ago the likes of JP Morgan, Andrew Carnegie et al were considered massively wealthy. If we were to transpose their net wealth directly into the present day, they'd be considered upper middle class. Inflation is a killer. It's the primary tool of economics that forces people to work until they're 65+ and it's the primary tool which forces relevance for each generation in order for them not to fall into obscurity.

Depends, if by 'rest on their laurels' you mean give their trust fund to a smart banker to invest for them then whether they lose 50% of that with each generation does become significant.

If they can use just the existence of that pot to gain access to further advantage not available to others then thats a huge head start for their own personal earning capability.

So? Are we not supposed to work hard so that we may pass on the fruits of our labor to our children and make them better off than we were? Perhaps it's simply an American trait, but the dream most of us possess is to leave our offspring better off than we were ourselves. Maybe it's because we don't have a caste system here but the object for any family is to climb the ladder. Btw, that 'smart banker' is just as likely to lose all their money, steal from them, etc as he is to perpetuate them into the future. See: Bernie Madoff

Not a problem, I just object to the power and influence which goes with any of these dynasties.

We can argue about who is crashing harder, and who is taking out a bigger mortgage for their kids to pay to fund their own lifestyles too .

Well I didn't read all the thread, but in a case like this they'd have to do away with the lottery tax as well. The lottery is the way that the average person will ever win this amount of money.

Seriously man worked on the team and also has received tons of money from the state and city to fund it. Why shouldn't there be a death tax, also NYC is broker then a mother fucker. How can you say his poor family is only going to get this amount of money.

But look at these few people who are millions, do you want your government to take there money, they succeeded. We're a third world country who thinks we're still on top.

Ahh remember back in the day, hearing how garbage men could make a good living and there were jobs for most. Well those days are over and it's soon going to become a beg, borrow, steal economy. But hey keep thinking that the rich did something special to deserve that money, other then starting off with lots of money.

And do you really think that Paris Hilton made those bags? No she was the one with the money and probably paid people 45k a year to design those, then fired them when they were done.

buddy of mine works for waste management doing collection routes...he loves it.  makes good money also.

Fuck inheritance tax.  Just because some of it is family wealth, that wealth started from practically nothing some generations ago.  Chinese laborers came here dirt poor, working on the most dangerous jobs building the railroads.  They saved up, building up wealth generation after generation.  Generations of doctors, lawyers, business owners, developers, etc.  Tough shit if your blood line chose not to value education and sacrifice for the next generation.
