Wow.

My old iPhone lasted me faithfully for 2 years.

I've had my 4 for less than a day and the screen is already cracked. Pathetic job, Apple. Absolutely pathetic.

Went to the Apple store and organized a tech meeting or whatever. The guy said they'd definitely be able to fix it cuz it's under warranty. The worst part is the screen CAME chipped, which is probably why it cracked.

iOS 4.0.1 is out for iPhones, supposedly fixes the signal meter.

I thought the "there's problems with the signal meter" thing was just a cover up?

No clue but when I held my friends iPhone 4, it had no problem (pre 4.0.1).

It's all good. They have replacement models in-store and I can still use the cracked phone. It's really just aesthetic damage but it's annoying.

@gs's karma

don't get me wrong, it's still a FANTASTIC phone, but the fact that the glass cracked this easily is pathetic

Got the new one no problem. Guy was like, half seriously accusing me of dropping it and lying about the story. It did fall from a standing up position onto it's side but that was it. That crack occured naturally.

dropped my 3gs so many times ive lost count.

a few chips and scratches from day-to-day use: keeping it in my pocket with coins, idiotic things like that...

would say that they're very durable devices.

Uzi I think it's probably a pretty different phone now that they've covered the whole damn thing in glass. I know the old ones are pretty tough, but I have a feeling that you'll crack these more easily.

the 3gs isn't much different, though...

they're both just one big touch-screen pane of glass, aren't they? glass cracks and breaks?

im not sure if there's any empirical 'evidence' that the 4g is more fragile or prone to breaking than the 3gs; just giving my anecdotal $0.02

The fact that yours cracked "naturally" doesn't alter that thought?

I've never actually held a 4g so take this with a grain of salt, but

it looks like the metal edges of the 4g don't come all the way up to the screen, so that when/if you drop it on the "front" part, all the impact is absorbed by that thinner black plastic and the screen itself rather than through the metal, the plastic, and then the screen on the 3gs.

That, and less rounded surfaces (such as the lack of a large bevel on the back of the 3gs) are more prone to cracking. smaller surface area at impact = higher force per area = larger chance for breaking/cracking

all that said, i'd still get one if the price was reasonable to upgrade from my 3gs and it doesn't appear to be.

RIM says Apple claims about BlackBerry unacceptable

TORONTO (Reuters) - Apple Inc appears to be deliberately distorting the issues surrounding the iPhone 4's antenna design by asserting that Research In Motion's BlackBerry has similar reception problems, RIM said.

"Apple's attempt to draw RIM into Apple's self-made debacle is unacceptable," RIM co-Chief Executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie said in a statement emailed late Friday.

"Apple's claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public's understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple's difficult situation."

Since the June 24 launch of the iPhone 4, some users have reported drastically reduced signal strength when they held the touch-screen phone a certain way, leading to dropped calls.

In response to the complaints Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said Friday the entire smartphone industry shared such reception problems, naming specifically Research in Motion, Samsung Electronics and HTC Corp.

At a rare, 90-minute press conference, Jobs maintained there were no problems with the iPhone 4's wraparound antenna design and accused the media of trying to "tear down" a company that had grown so successful.

"This is life in the smartphone world. Phones aren't perfect. Most every smartphone we tested behaved like this," Jobs said.

In response of Jobs' comments, RIM's co-chief executives issued a statement defending the BlackBerry's design and criticizing Apple's approach to dealing with the iPhone 4's antenna issue.

"RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage," they said.

"One thing is for certain, RIM's customers don't need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity," the statement said.

RIM, based in Waterloo, Ontario, was referring to Jobs' offer to provide iPhone 4 users with free phone cases to address the reception complaints.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, could not be reached immediately to comment.

Now the entire back and entire front is covered in (what the Apple store guy told me..) "helicopter glass"

Just like a windshield, one chip or crack could spread. As mine did.

I think the 3GS and all iPhones before it were also plastic, btw.

The old ones had a plastic rim though, which would catch any direct impact. Also the new ones are glass front and back.

In 2 years and several drops, that's the worst damage that came from my phone. Actually, that crack is from someone actually throwing it against a wall. That's the worst that would happen. I feel like if I threw the 4 against the wall, it might shatter into a million pieces.

I think that would actually stop me getting an iPhone 4 tbh, now that I think about it. I drop my phone quite a bit. Resilient little fucker though, worst damage is a few scuff marks and a scratch from a key on the screen.

EDIT: Although I guess if get insurance you'd be ok. They usually seem pretty good about covering basically anything. But it'd be annoying to have to get replaced every time you dropped it. In one of those videos that usually seem to appear whenever Apple release anything, of someone with too much money and hatred for Apple breaking it, the whole damn thing shattered on the second drop, from pocket height.
