New GPU?

So my 8800GT is starting to show it's age on newer games and I happen to have some spare cash.

I was thinking 5770 or 5850. Is the greater performance that 5850 offers worth almost double the price? Would my E8400 bottleneck the GPU?

Probably 5770 then. E8400 would just bottleneck a 5850. I've got a 5770 and it's not exactly struggling on any game (1680x1050).

i have a 5850. i like it, have been running eyefinity. it's a q6600, i don't think you'll have any problems with e8400.

How much more performance would I get from 5850 though? I want to know if it would be worth the extra 130€.

Rule of thumb: don't try to play BC2 without a quad core. Unless the recent patches have changed this much..

For example, my Q9300 @ 3.2Ghz is at 100% on all cores in BC2, while my 5770 is hovering around 80-90%, so my CPU is actually bottlenecking.

That depends on monitor resolution though:

Phenom II x4 955 stock @ 3.2 Ghz and 5770 on 1920x1080
GPU at 100% and CPU about 60-70% on all cores.

You probably run 1680x1050?

That's odd, I play BC2 on an E8400 with a 9800GT and get 30-45 FPS on all low/medium settings (no AA or AF) @ 1920x1200 in regular action sequences, usually higher if less is happening. I doubt you could get 60+ frames on maximum settings with an E8400 and say a GTX 460, but I'm sure it'd run high settings with AA & AF fine.

OP: personally I'd wait for the GTX 460 to become available. Benchmarks have shown is outdoes the 5830, and sometimes ties with the 5850, while priced lower.

Dont use BC2 (unless you REALLY like it) as part of your buying decision. It generally runs like shit, and works well inconsistently with quads, unless that was fixed with a recent patch. Most games do not have this problem. I wouldnt think a 5850 would bottleneck a E8400

I suppose waiting for the 460 would be the best decision then.
