some college came for a school trip to see our politics class and look at "ethnic diversity" ... they went for a trip to sparkhill and the number 6 bus route, most had never seen a non-white person, i'd much rather be from birmingham!

oh yeah and birmingham's in the midlands

birmingham is undoubtedly reputed to be one of the worst cities in england... why you're proud of that, i don't know.

all the former-industrial/textiles/steel cities in the north are dead holes now... nothing going for them; nothing will ever again, either.

the casino and Manchester United are the only reasons i go into Manchester, it is pretty shite

places like Levenshulme, Rusholme, Moss Side, Longsight, Gorton... could go on for hours, need to be bombed for any small improvement

alright then, grand economic advisor... how will cities like sheffield, derby, bradford, birmingham, liverpool, salford etc. come back from the pwnage they have suffered in the last 50 years? industrial britain is dead and will never make a comeback because there's no interest or money in it: what will bring all of these cities back and revitalize the 'north', other than a massive reconstruction? which aint gonna happen any time soon in 'austere britain'...

Most will see a revitalisation when the coal mines inevitably reopen.

Besides I'm from Newcastle, which has some of the biggest reconstruction projects going in the country.

Zeeq, I was down your neck of the woods (ish) this week, went canoeing from Glasbury, through Hay, Hereford, Hoarwithy, Ross etc, we were planning on getting to Monmouth but just chilled at a pub and got sidetracked in Ross

It was beautiful around there.

ross is about 3 miles from where i am right now. you go to the inn on the wye? did you make it as far as symonds yat with the small boat-crossing? there's a pub there like looks like something straight out of lord of the rings hobbit-ville... in the middle of a steep valley. my grandparents have a house on the other side of the river from it. very nice.

monmouth is nice, too.

moab LOL at the idea that the coal industry will revitalize the north. it was closed in the first place because it was losing tons of money, you moron. what makes you think the coal in the north is going to compete with say, the mega-tonnes in china that are far cheaper? maybe in the far-future when resources are scarce... but that's hardly a lifeline for the entire north, is it? that'll run out... and then what? the north is a huge economic, political, educational and social drain on the south. you can hardly deny that.

We walked around town for one day but we were camping right outside the White Lion Inn I think, just after the second bridge by river (downstream).

Nah, sadly we ran out of time, we only got as far as the White Lion in Ross, it distracted us for two days

Yeah, I've been there before a couple of times prior to this.

My dad used to be big into competitive rowing when he was younger and always went down there for the Regatta and stuff. I'm not sure which pub it is but he stole a pint glass from one and had to travel all the way down there to make a court appearance lol, this was years ago mind though.

They were also shut down to conserve the seams and the coal that comes from China, whilst cheaper and in greater bulk, is of shit quality.

The only reason that most of the North is at a disadvantage is because it is abandoned by every successive government that marches through Westminster.

Might just have to do that, I definitely want to go on another trip like that again though.

Rowing for most of the day then camping in the eve, maybe not live on MoD rations next time though haha. The meal we had in the White was the nicest food I've ever had after 4 days on rations.

the only reason anyone in the north of England would disagree that it's nicer to live in the south is because they can't afford it

there's nice places up here, but to go to them you'd need to go through shitholes most of the times. to get into Manchester i have to drive through one of its toilets Rusholme, not pretty. the Lambo dealer is in Stockport... depressing.

yah quality of life in the south is just generally, all-round nicer. im sure there are rich-spots in the north, as there are anywhere... but the fact is that the overall quality of living - socially, economically, politically - is wanker than wank. i would not want to live in an economic blackspot, full of reactionary socialists and unionists, with a bunch of working-class people that were in factories or down a mine one-generation ago. fuck that. you can keep yer 'charming noorf'.

also moab/sere the 'midlands' where birmingham is... is way fucking worse. the black country? holy shit dude. it's like something from 1880's russia.
