Three photos from a Roller Derby tournament held a month or so ago. My girlfriend was in one of the teams. These are the three best photos from the day.

Heh, how many of you guys have bought PS (any of the products)? I read something about 45 - 55% of PS users having pirated copy of PS. Nothing special, considering the price of Adobe products.

A few pics from when I stayed at Langley Castle for a wedding.

One of the many Peacocks roaming the grounds and making some of the weirdest noises I've ever heard.

Question for Wallpaper, burnzz, bldw, etc:

I won't ask how you take pictures like that, but where did you learn to take such great pictures? Wallpaper's shots of Seattle especially are awesome, and I've always wanted to learn how to take pictures like that.

Just keep snapping man!

You'll soon get an eye for what makes a good picture, and what doesn't. The more you photograph, the more you'll learn about what shutter speeds and aperture sizes compliment your surroundings.

(and if you want to cheat and use photoshop I guess that's okay as well )

Photoshop isn't really cheating tbh

alot of photography to me is about light, and it's absence.
normal, everyday scenes can have dramatic appeal if light hits it a certain way.

and like Camm said, for every picture i post here, there are 15 that sit on my harddrive.
i look at the world around me through a 'viewfinder' now, and make time and effort to take a picture - if it doesn't work, i'm not so hard on myself.
digital photography has made it easy take multiple pictures of aa subject, and keep  the one you like . . .

Im self taught. Just observe and experiment, I would say also not to go out and buy the best, expensive equipment immediately either, even if you have the money for it. Learning with shitty stuff will help a lot I think. This doesnt include point and shoots though, I -hate- them

PS: Primes, use them

EDIT: Happy 4th!

Yeah, I don't think I have a "bad" eye when it comes to pictures, I've just never figured out how to make them 'pop' like the ones in here. I don't know what ISO, aperture, etc. are or how to adjust them. I mean did you guys learn from a class? Book? Online guides? What is a prime?

I just read lots of forums. Photography on the Net forums (google POTN) is a good place to start, tons of helpful people and guides there. No guide can replace experience however, you just need to get some equipment and start shooting.

If youre wanting to get into photography I would recommend getting either an old semi-pro DSLR like the 20d, or a new beginner DSLR like the T1i for cheap and a simple 50mm f/1.8 lens. Basically the cheapest setup you can buy that isnt a P&S and learning with a single, cheap prime will help you not become lazy. When you use zooms its very easy to just zoom in and out to find shit that fills the frame and just take that, while primes force you to zoom with your feet and find the best angle

ISO is the light sensitivity setting of your cameras sensor. Lower ISO = less grainier pictures, but slower shutter speed. Higher ISO = granier but faster.
Aperture is the size of the opening in the lens. Larger aperture (smaller number) = bigger opening, faster shutter speeds and smaller depth of field. Smaller aperture (higher number) = smaller opening, slower shutter speeds, larger depth of field

On SLRs these are very easily accessed usually via the wheel by the shutter button and wheel by the back screen. It will be less confusing after you play with them for a week or so. You can always ask us any questions you have... Also look up the Rule of Thirds, which is a basic.

I did City and Guilds evening classes, also think about your composition, angles, perspective, field of view etc rather than just snapping.
Try to compose one good pic rather than taking dozens and hoping for a good one - usually you get nothing.
