I know we're only in the middle of June but after reading this opinion piece in U.S. News & World Report:

it got me thinking of what Obama will do immediately before the 2010 mid-term election. All indications now are that the Democrats are going to get their ass handed to them like what happened in 1994 with the Newt Gingrich, Contract with America, Conservative re-take of Congress.

So it got me thinking which of the following could Obama do before the election to return favor to his party:

Announce an immediate pull out of Iraq
Announce a pull out of Afghanistan (less likely)
Actually close Guantánamo Bay
Make peace with North Korea
Make nice with Iran
Open up Cuba
Force Israel to open their blockage on the Palestinians
Stop the oil spill from further harming the environment (hopefully well before then)
Air strikes on Iran's nuclear centrifuges
...or something else that you'll think of

Its probably too early to even be discussing this, but I'll bump this during October to see if any of our predictions come true.

I'm quite surprised at how little the public reaction to the ongoing troop presence has been. There's zero talk of pulling out, from any of the "experts" as well. If it was Bush, or indeed McCain I think the story would be very different. And if you do move out of Iraq, the troop numbers in Afghanistan are likely to increase.

Can you see Afghanistan as an inherited war by the next POTUS as well?

Looks like some of that Government cheese is being spread just-in-time for the election:

House votes to extend tax credit on new home purchases 3 months

Now lets see if the Senate follows suit (they probably will).

Also the Democrats just put a bill to extend Unemployment Benefits beyond 99 weeks. But instead of needing a majority vote they played politics to require a 2/3rds vote because of some special rules in the House (to have the money be added directly to the debt).

Now Democrats have a political football to play with saying Republicans are heartless for not extending the 99 week unemployee checks right before the election.

One would argue then that the American involvement in Afghanistan started when the Soviets invaded. Few airstrikes here and there after they left (or it was cruise missiles or something) and then escalated after 9/11.

Well, AFAIK, the "Vietnam War" technically was not a war from the US point of view, as the Congress didn't declare a war.

Well, if you include America's involvement with helping the mujahedeen fight the Russians in Afghanistan that makes the Afghan war about 25 years.

Maybe Obama will pull out another video of Bin Laden, or use his earthquake ray on Venezuela, or let terrorists attack the US?
