The whole idea is that it should be reliable. You can't achieve a sufficient bandwidth with good enough QoS over a 3G connection for that. It's not like you can buffer it loads like when streaming other video.
I think the whole FaceTime is a real gimmick. The EVO 4G does a better job in utilizing the front facing camera by using a general messenger (Fring) that also works with other messenger clients (Skype, AIM, etc.). So instead of restricting your mobile video calls only between phones, you can also use it to call people who are on their computer.
could not have said it any better m8. one reason why apple had soo many preorders is mostly due to facetime. it only works when a) theres wi fi in your vicinity and B) works on iphone 4 with another iphone 4. cant do it on any other phone. that second point being said, customers are forced to get their other friends to get the iphone 4 so that they can all enjoy facetime. thank goodness that facetime runs on wifi and not that crummy gay t and t service. imagine the horrors of at&t 3g network handling video conferencing. and lets not go into how bad the signal quality is when you hold the phone.CapnNismo wrote:

I think that the video conferencing with a mobile phone could be very useful, it makes a lot of since. I just find the fact that you can only use FaceTime between ONLY iPhones to be pointless. Apple says it is an open standard and I'm sure Skype will add that to their iPhone app, so I suppose it's only a matter of time. I read a bit on the FaceTime spec and it seems like Apple wants to build their own VoIP between iPhones. It could work in Europe, but I don't see AT&T taking that one at all without adding on a hefty fee of some sort...
It works with skype as well, ffs. You can skype your friends off your iphone 4.

Not that I even own an iPhone 4 - always wait for 2nd gen Apple products, when they've ironed out the biggest problems. (that said - I've still never paid for an Apple product, despite the fact I get fairly hefty discounts)
And, AT SOME POINT, AT&T will feel they are capable of handling it, and will PROBABLY update it. AT&T's 3g is capable of being upgraded to be faster than Sprint's 4g. Sprint is having no issues handling the EVO.Bertster7 wrote:

I played around on my friends iPhone 4, and I must say I am impressed. Everything on the screen looks vibrant and sharp, and it feels a lot better in the hand; the new features are also a nice addition.

Really disappointed to hear about the cracking problems when it's dropped...but that's why you buy a case. I had a case on my current 3G for almost 2 years. Dropped it, got it thrown against a wall by my ex-girlfriend, and it survived just fine. 2 weeks into not having a case on it I drop it... permanent scarring.

I sometimes think that the only reason AT&T really still exists and hasn't gone under or been bought up has been because of the sales of the iPhone and the contracts that come with it padding their balance sheets. That being said, I am so glad I am in Austria and not the USA for my data plan. I pay €10 a month for 1GB of data and I don't even come anywhere near using that up and I use my phone A LOT. For €15/month I could have 5GB, but even that is relatively pointless since I don't tether my device and there's always a wifi hot spot nearby (one thing that does confuse me - if you're living in a metropolitan area, how are you going over your data limits? Just tap into a hot spot).
