Years ago I learned some HTML coding, got pretty well into it, even build a website for a school project. I never actually made my own website though, as I have absolutely no idea how to put the stuff up. Silly ain't it, I can do the coding, but can't actually upload it? In any case, I'd like to give it a try again, so I'm just asking for some tips on:

1. How do you actually upload stuff?
2. What are good places to get free webspace? (I can get a free .tk domain name, so that's no problem, but I need some actual space)

Cheers,

well, if you have your own hardware and internet connection you can host it yourself.  if you need to borrow someone's hardware and bandwidth, dreamhost is good.  they each have their own interfaces for uploading your site content, which you can find through their help section.

Linux: Lamp
Windows: Wamp

This doesnt give you epic flexibility, but for your needs it would be fine.

Please note that this is only if you want to have like a dedicated box at home.

If not

x10hosting is pretty good for freehosting.

In regards to your website making, try and steer away from tables and the like, try and use div's and CSS.

I've got a site on Google Sites and you have a bit of space there to upload stuff. I've just started the process with a friend to register my domain for me and he's going to provide me with unlimited webspace (under fair use). I can refer you to him, he charges very little for webspace (so I am told, I'm getting a bit of a friends package with it).

If you're at a university, though, you should have a few hundred megs worth of space...

If you feel daring, 1and1 has really cheap hosting...but you get what you pay for since their customer support is generally nothing short of garbage.

Never use Lamp/Wamp/Xampp for actual hosting.

i use wamp for my home server

i did mention it doesnt give you epic flexibility, but most functions for php/mysql are all readily plausible.

Home hosting is not an option, I meant freehosting, sorry if that wasn't clear. As I already have a Google account, I'll try Google Sites first, if that doesn't suit I'll try Dreamhost.

The question still remains: how do you actually upload stuff, like get in on WWW? Given that you have some webspace and a domain name?

Actually at this stage, just trying it out for fun, I don't want to spend any money at all, but thank a lot for the offer.

I'm at university but I'll graduate within a month or two, so I won;t have any reliable webspace there.

They are made for development and as such, are pretty lax on security. So if you use it you might want to tidy things up a bit.

For fun (as to see what your website would look like) you don't really need a web-host. But if you want to see your website alive and share it with everyone in the web you could check this site for free web-stuff. There are couple of places offering unlimited bandwidth and webspace but usually for a reason... I wouldn't spend much time on free stuff, though.

If you want easy webhost, some space and freedom without forced ads and get your website fast without spending much time browsing thorough viable options you can check out oni.cc
I hopped up a website at http://www.oni.cc/ just to show how to upload some stuff there.

https://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad64/BLdw/stuff.jpg
oni's control panel.

https://i922.photobucket.com/albums/ad64/BLdw/Stuff1.jpg
and here you can upload stuff directly if you don't want to bother yourself with FTP-clients.

5.5 GB Space
200 GB Monthly Bandwidth
Upload max file size: 4MB
Free Subdomain oni.cc
Very short & easy-to-remember!
99.9% Uptime Guarantee.
50 Addon & 50 Parked Domains
MySQL & PHP Support
FTP account, File Manager
100% free, No Ads:
* No ads, No pop-up, No banner.
* We will not place ads on your site.

Oni.cc isn't the best webhos aroundt, not even best free host but I skimmed through some hosts and this was the only one with more than 1GB space, with more than 10GB monthly bandwidth, without forced ads and I was able to set up immediately when I signed up. And for fun stuff, testing, personal small web-space it should offer something to do. Though, you're not allowed to upload porn in there.

thanks for the tip, but I already have Gmail addresses, I don't want to bother registering anything for my domain other than the default one that comes with it. I don't need it at all.

They have proper CPanel on the free accounts, give you 10mB MySQL space and let you use a proper domain name if you have one. (y)

Used them for the longest time before I switched to a dedi box and later to hostgator.
