i don't smoke. i don't drink. i don't do drugs. and, quite frankly, i don't care what you think about me. you asked a question, John, and a ridiculous one at that. i gave you a fitting (imo) answer. do with that what you will.

I'd put speeding in a different category. It's not just your own life you're endangering.

I always stand downwind of others (unless the wind's crazy that day in which case I can't do much, I'm not Zeus), I blow my smoke upwards, I always avoid taking a drag when a kid is walking past, and I always put my cigarette in the trash. I'd say I go above and beyond to be courteous to others.

If you're concerned about getting cancer because you have to breathe a bit of smoke for a second every once in a while you should probably wear a respirator when you walk outside, because car exhaust is everywhere. I was at work yesterday, doing parcel pick-up service in the garage of my store. The ventilation is pretty awful. I was there for 6 hours total, and by the end of my shift my throat and nose felt stuffy. I feel way worse after working one of those shifts than I do after a cigarette.

edit: I haven't once coughed, sneezed or felt ill because someone at the table next to me is sucking on a martini.
So yeah, I've pretty much maxed out on this thread. Have fun, guys.

Fuck this bullshit, I'm not paying $12 a pack. I can drive to New Jersey, pay $7 at a savings of $50 a carton and save about $40 even after gas is factored in. While I'm there, I might as well fill up my tank with cheaper gas too!
You're planning on paying all that extra tax when you file next April, right?  I mean...that's what the Use Tax is for!

Seriously though, I hate how smokers have become the whipping boy.  In Buffalo, some bars collect money from all the smokers so they can pay the fine and let the patrons smoke indoors.

Then you're much more courteous than most smokers. My friends are all really good about it when I'm hanging around with them and they're smoking, but I tend to find random people don't give a shit.

I haven't smoked since December but still find a girl smoking to just be so damn hot sometimes.

Move out to Jersey and commute to NY tbh.

I've quit for six months in the past. I started again because I missed the social aspect of smoking.
I know what you mean. It was a nice family get together. We gathered around his bed. I was there when they pulled the intibator tube out and gave him morphine. Nine months of hellish chemo and a hard death from lung cancer.
But hey, I got to see all the family again at the funeral. Very social.

That's awful. I'm really sorry for your loss ATG.

However, in Japan a lot of men smoke yet they have a lower incidence of lung cancer than in the US.

They hike the prices for many reasons, they know that lots of smokers can't quit and will simply pay up so it's easy money. But they also know that as they get ever more expensive it deters people from trying cigs and buying their own packs and then getting caught up in the whole addiction shit. It worked for me, I smoke cigs from time to time but the expensive packs deter me from ever buying a pack for myself. That and I've always seen smoking as a sort of social thing you do with friends combined with drinking and such.

same with the redskins. I think back in the day it was seen as a luxurious pleasure, to be enjoyed after a nice dinner with the plantation owner and the town blacksmith and the chieftain. Then someone decided to mass produce them and make them super cheap and lace them with additives that give you a hell of a buzz.

sad part: they don't raise tax because they care about your health but purely because it's such easy fucking money.

nah... like i said, it's both. Hiking up the price is a good way to deter people from picking up the habit in the first place.

Popping in once more for this: unless he burns himself on the cigarette lighter and veers into oncoming traffic.

On a less silly note, you can always get drunk and catch a ride home (avoiding drunk driving altogether) without making people gag on the atmosphere you create, other than (if you're the type) making an ass of yourself.

I always laugh when my friend Bob goes camping. He says he " doesn't  like " hiking but the truth is he is the slowest walker and the fastest quitter. Cracks my ass up whn we stop for a breather and he smokes a cigarette.

There is nothing glamorus or attraactive or useful about using tobacco and if you haven't quit yet you are an idiot.

25 years for me. Stopped four months ago. Never again.

There are much more expensive forms of smoking yet many are not deterred because of price.

Drive to New Jersey then.  Sucks to be you, but the alternative is to move or suck it up.

It's more economical for Halliburton to incorporate in the UAE but still do business with the US Government.  Honestly, that's worth bitching about far more than your petty cigarette tax.

It's not though. They honestly don't give two fucks about the health of smokers, this is simply a money grab couched in the appearance of a health issue to make it more palatable and get non-smokers to go all nazi on smokers. If every single smoker in NYC quit today, the city and state would go bankrupt tomorrow.
