Gonna reformat this weekend, my comp is a bit overdue for one. I've backed up my user folder, anything else important I might miss?

savegames not stored in user folder
firefox settings folder (if you use FF)
games you "aquired" via LAN meaning you don't have the ISO or similar...

I'm sure many of you tech regulars have heard of this site, but for any lurkers out there who don't post much in this section: http://ninite.com/ is amazing when doing a reformat.

Can't believe I haven't seen it before.

Odd ?, but what is the difference between the retail windows 7 software and the win7 for system builders? Is it the same, just without a manual and the pretty box?

Yeah as far as I know you just get the disc in a paper-sleve rather than the fine and dandy retail box...

windows 7 ultimate has the same features as windows 7 enterprise. the only difference is enterprise can be volume licensed.

That's not what I meant. I mean is there a diff between, say, win7 home retail and win7 home for system builders. As in, is it only good for a certain time, features shut off over time, etc.

thanks for the input. I'll wait for some more input on the matter because I'd love to only spend $100 on the OEM one instead of $200 (or w/e) for retail

Difference between OEM and retail is you can uninstall retail from one pc and put it onto another, OEM is a one use thing (not including formatting and repairing)
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

There's a review (1st one for me right on that page) saying that if you change mobos to just call the 800 # and get it reset/switched/whatever.

True/False?

True from what I have heard...

Just don't tell them that you "upgraded" your motherboard.. say the old one broke and you replaced it

well actually windows 7 home prem is only $150 so that's no too bad (and don't have to fight with the OEM), so don't need any more replies to my question.

True, I had to swap out my motherboard as of a fault and when I called them up, they were fine.

What do you guys think of the Sony NEX camera series? Does it compare with todays DSLRs?

I don't know the specs but it looks like a standard compact pocket cam with a lens attached tbh...

Theyre a definite step up from point and shoots because it has a larger sensor, which also makes bokeh possible (though, not a whole lot). NEX and similar cameras are slower than SLRs, much more limited in respect to lenses, poorer battery life and less expandability. Theyre great for some who just want a little more than a camera for snaps, but I dont think they are really worth it. Not to mention they are harder to DIY mod for various purposes

If youre worried about size, theyre good. Or if you dont mind a bit of extra bulk, a low level DSLR with a 50mm slapped on it wouldnt be bad either

EDIT: DO WANT, but I feel guilty spending so much on photography in the last month http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,14648.html

EVIL (stupid acronym) and 4/3rds cameras have bigger sensors as compared to the one you posted. Z5 and similar cameras use a P&S sensor; 5.75 x 4.31 mm. 4/3rds cameras use much larger sensors, ~18.0 x 13.5 mm

Just to nitpick, because it's photography. Bokeh is the "quality" of the out of focus blur. It's usually described in rather qualitative terms. eg "That Canon 85L produces rather creamy bokeh, as you'd expect for a lens that costs 2,500 bucks". There is a correlation with bokeh and the type of aperture in the lens (among other things) - a lens with a circular aperture will produce bokeh that looks a lot better than bokeh made by a cheap lens with 5 aperture blades.

But you have the right idea. Since there is a larger sensor, you will have less depth of field.. and thus out of focus areas will be "more" blurry.
