By the same token, when that politician got recorded assaulting the guys asking him questions recently, clearly he committed a crime, but I'd also like to see the full video to understand more about why he reacted the way he did. The same goes for the flotilla videos involving the IDF and the "aid" workers.
In effect, when I watch a video, I try to make as few assumptions as possible and attempt to investigate more about the whole situation. It makes sense, right?
Surely, that's a better approach than just assuming that the cops are always (or even usually) right.
tell ya what, why don't you tell me what it is about this video that leads you believe that this cop was not assaulted.Turquoise wrote:

The benefit of the doubt means, for example, when a cop is pointing a gun at a person dressed like a gangsta who is pointing a gun at him, I am going to give the "benefit of the doubt" to the cop that he is in the right and that he is the good guy at that moment. Please do not read into it anymore than that. I am not looking to solve the ME issues with my post.

You made a statement of giving that benefit of the doubt to a cop 100% of the time when the cop is attacked. I responded to it accordingly, because defending yourself has logical limits.lowing wrote:

Yes, I trust cops more than I trust gangstas, but that doesn't mean that I trust authority much in general, and I really don't see why I should.
Cops are still human, so they still have the same flaws as everyone else. Yes, I trust them enough to inadvertently depend on them under certain circumstances, but I don't put them on a pedestal. You seem to do that somewhat.
And yeah, the cop got pushed. I get that. He was dealing with some ornery bitches. I get that too. I'm just not sure if slugging the shit out of the girl's face was necessary. Admittedly, it was entertaining, but that's beside the point... lol

I don't think anyone is questioning whether the cop was assaulted, most people just seem to think that his retaliation was excessive. I'm all for police kicking the shit out of those who deserve it, but it's not a good idea to do it with a crowd watching. Ideally the cop should have maced both of them and thrown them in the car, then dealt with it later, but we don't live in an ideal world and the officers decision in the heat of the moment was the warranted.

Only question for that, what's faster? I think the punch worked out.eskimo_sammyjoe wrote:

Good point, the punch did work well. Maybe punch them, throw them in the car, mace them, drag them out of the car, then punch them with a can of mace...SplinterStrike wrote:

Cops aren't citizens at all Lowing? They are Police officers 24/7, that's why it's ok when off duty police officers shot people or try to detain people. I would like to know the "jaywalking" ticket to be issued. If she was putting anyone at risk, such a small crime(with a big fine) to be trying to arrest someone over. Not saying that the cop is wrong ,if she was putting herself or others at risk, but crossing the street shouldn't be against the law and it's a very stupid law that I will probably break over the course of today.lowing wrote:

So seeing how this was over a jay walking offense, I can already tell you that the cops head was in a confrontational stage. Also the jaywalking might be total bullshit like a seat belt ticket.
As lowing will 100% put his faith in the cops, I'd like to know the full story from start to finish.
In my experiences with police and minor infractions, most of the time the cop will just have a chat to you and let you go without a ticket. Mind you, I live in australia where the cops seem to be a bit more 'down to earth'

I stand by what I said, I bet you give the benefit of the doubt to the police 100% of the time as well. That is to say given any situation you stumble across, you will run to the cop for protection or advice over anyone else in the heat of the moment. IE, you will trust the cops judgement first.Turquoise wrote:

I loved the Henry Gates example regarding this. All of you instantly jumped on the "the cop is a racist" bandwagon until it had been proven the cop was 100% in the right and Gates was the fuckin racist that deserved to be arrested. After that came out what happened, dead silence, no apologies to the cop no admittance that Gates or any of you was wrong. You all just shut the fuck up and life went on.

Cops aren't citizens? They are not allowed to vote? They do not pay taxes? They do not have Social Security Cards? Cops are allowed to arbitrarily shoot people without fear of reprisal or punishment? if it is determined that their actions were unjustified?cpt.fass1 wrote:

We need a decent Police officer on this board to add his 2 cents to these cop debates, otherwise it just goes in the same circle it always does.
Milk.org was a member here and a Policeman I believe, should get him back.

They're Citizen like the military are Citizen, they don't even think of themselves as citizens. Do you know any cops, lowing? They refer to none cops as citizens, and they feel that they aren't Citizens. So in the "legal" sense they are, but they mentally don't feel that they are.lowing wrote:

I thought I read in your post that the cops reaction was excessive......If not then you took from the video what you should have taken from it except a cop shouldn't care if he defends himself in front of a crowd or not. In fact the crowd should help the cop in trouble if that crowd had anyone worth a fuck in it.eskimo_sammyjoe wrote:

The cops would have more friends if they weren't letting drunk police chiefs off, fabricating evidence and frequently dropping unarmed civilians in a hail of gunfire. Sort of like politicians; they earn every ounce of hate and actually deserve a lot more than they get.lowing wrote:

Lets look at the charge, jaywalking.
A nuisance law designed to circumvent Darwanism and collect money for the city.
In fact 85% of the laws the police enforce are nuisance laws that serve no purpose other than to raise money. They shouldn't even be called police, they should be called revenuers.
