A client is the user's front end that one uses to send and recieve emails.
The client, behind the scenes, sends out information to the SMTP server regarding what the user has implemented into the UI. It also checks the SMPT server for waiting emails to receive.
Gmail and hotmail have a seamless integration. It's more apparent with imap and pop where you have a server (or provider) and a client such as outlook, thunderbird etc.
Simple terminal could be classified as a client, as it can be used to communicate with an SMPT server over telnet.

I think I had Eudora ~v1.5.
That was in the days when all you got from your ISP was a floppy containing 'Fetch' to download Eudora and Navigator.
