It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician, Who has given us the right to vote.

is that anyone at all after WWII?
I may not agree with much of the US foreign policy, but don't belittle the sacrifice of ordinary men and women just because you don't believe in what they died for.

No no no, please don't misunderstand me. I fully appreciate that the biggest sacrifice one can make is to give their life for something/someone. but the same applies to troops who have died for many other countries, including the UK. They haven't died to protect a country. They've died through fuck ups and as tools and playthings for the country's elite. There's a difference. By all means, please remember the dead. But don't dishonour them by assuming everyone who has died in the military died for their country. More likely they died for politicans, and that is certainly true when we consider the vast majority of conflicts the West have been involved in since WWII. Yes it's terrible to see a friend die, or to know someone who dies, of course it is, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I knew one guy, a Finnish soldier serving in the UN, who died when Israel bombed the bunker he was in - a UN observation post. OK, he volunteered to be part of a UN force. But I can remember him while thinking his death was a waste of a life and didn't achieve anything in the end, not really, it was just a fuck up and he became a pawn in a bigger game of international statesmanship and HR atrocities. So, I'm not belittling the sacrifices anyone made. But I am saying that it's disingenous to assume they died for their country or any higher good, and just because a certain soldier might think they are fighting for their country or to make the world a better place or whatever doesn't make it so.

TBH that stuff Harmor posted 'It is the veteran...' etc is just militaristic bullshit. Most veterans, if you mean people who have been in the armed forces, haven't fought anyway, even if they've been in the forces when there's been a war on, they're just tools in the massive machine of a nation's military. Would a cook receive the same level of appreciation as a front-line soldier? Or should they? In fact I'd suggest that most (?) veterans who HAVE fought didn't fight for their country but for the men beside them, wouldn't you agree?

@ruis: You should seriously learn when to shut the fuck up ... let them honor them that made the ultimate sacrifice in peace and go spew your nonsense elsewhere ...

And to everybody else: This is a memorial thread, NOT a debate thread ...

He has a point you know.

He's just saying that people are generally a pawn in a larger game of chess, which is true for alot of soldiers of almost all conflict.

Though this doesn't belittle the respect that should be given for them.

People have blogs for that. It's pretty tame to come in here and indiscriminately delete posts that don't conform to or agree with the topic.

True ... and it's equally lame to not recognize a memorial thread for what it is ... memorial!

Is it really that much to ask for to leave a couple of thread each year alone?

I SALUTE YOU... CANADA! YAY CANADA!

Our world war two contributions ended in disaster, but we kicked ass in the first war!

I'm actually putting serious thought into joining the Canadian forces. I looked into a carreer as I pilot. My visions excellent, and everything else, the only problem is I can't do math that great. So the Candian armed forces look pretty good, a paratrooper, If I get elite enough, would be a nice accomplishment. Just a thought... but...

You guys did yourselves proud at Juno Beach. Don't knock Canadian contributions in WWII

Yes, we did good. It sucks how we lost a lot of guys, our beach was probably the second worst after Omaha. Dieppe was a disaster, but... I actually really love Canada. Most of the time, when something bad happens, its cause we listened to Britain

Other than the whole railroad thing.
