No, they relied on that individuals doodling to target him for death, just like they relied on that film makers movie about violence within Islam as reason to target him for death. I don't care what Islam does in Islamic countries, those that are and were targeted for death for their expressions were not and are not in Islamic countries. This is the problem. What happened 1000 years ago does not rationalize what is happening today, and it never will.CameronPoe wrote:
I don't think Islamic fundamentalist extremists rely on someones doodling activities to spur their decision to kill. Said doodler would probably be a target anyway. In previous times we burned witches and heretics - Islam is just a bit behind the curve in some countries, the entire world doesn't progress in lockstep with each other.lowing wrote:
Now that is POV I can relate to, still, no one against flag burning has hunted down a flag burner and killed them or started riots.
Actually lowing my example quite frankly does rationalise it. It totally rationalises it. And there were no riots in non Islamic countries and any loony can make a death threat - this whole issue is totally overblown and is just being used as a stick to beat all Muslims with rather than the tiny number of whackjobs who unfairly end up giving the rest a bad name.

That's the thing though, you're not. In doing this not only are you being a dick to fundamentalists and extremists - which is fine - you're being a dick to regular Muslims, who would view this as you having no respect for their religion. And frankly it's true; whilst their religion can't dictate what other people do, by drawing Muhammed it does show a certain lack of respect for their religion.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

This isn't to say that you shouldn't be able to do it, and of course I agree with free speech/free drawing(?). But I'm sure there are much better ways to demonstrate free speech than piss off a bunch of people who have never done anything to you.
but yet they dont care when their fellow mooslims burn a countries flag....meh.ghettoperson wrote:

you keep speaking of "the few", yet there is a never ending string of examples as to how "the few" are fucked up. I also notice it is never the same "few" that get caught, or blow themselves up. The problem with Islam is, it does not take much to "force" an otherwise moderate to turn radical. It appears any bullshit excuse will do. Draw a cartoon and some Muslim has "had it" with the west. Make a film and "that does it", some Muslim goes on the warpath. Islam has a trigger finger and it does not take much to set it off.CameronPoe wrote:

How come you are so sure it's an moderate that turns radical and not an already radical that pulls the trigger?lowing wrote:

You quite evidently don't really know any real Muslims and have a little bee in your bonnet over this. That's your prerogative I suppose. I can think of more productive things to do than rant about fringe groups all the time.lowing wrote:

When the Atheists, Humanists and Agnostics association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison decided to defend the right of free speech by drawing stick figures of the Prophet Muhammed on campus sidewalks, the campus Muslim Students Association quickly responded.
They followed the atheists on their blasphemous journey, and whenever a drawing of the Prophet Muhammed appeared, the Muslim students drew boxing gloves on the figure, and changed the name to Muhammed Ali.

The 'don't draw Muhammad' rule is as artificial and ludicrous as a Christian church deciding it's a good idea to bonk yourself on the head with a flat board after each spoken sentence.ghettoperson wrote:

The point to drawing Muhammad despite violent reactions is because of the violent reactions. It is an assertive move proclaiming peoples' right not to have their culture displaced in favor of not brushing up against the unreasonable sensibilities of an implant.
As to the underlined, that's skimming the boundaries of false. Non-Muslims and non-Muslim organizations may feel bound by Muslim rules when Muslim wackos attempt or threaten to enforce them violently. I respect their religion insomuch as it remains reasonable. I have no qualms about mocking the stupid parts, just like any other faith.
Now that's actually awesome.AussieReaper wrote:

But Muhammed Ali was awesome, so that's not much of a stretch.
