That's my worst fear.

Anyway, I think you should break your habit of sitting in front of the computer all day long. I didn't do nearly as well as I could have or should have in high school (I graduated with a 3.49, or a B+/A- average), and one of the main reasons for that was that I spent way too much time playing BF2 or browsing the internet instead of getting my work done. You need to start somewhere; step one is getting off the computer and step two is getting a job, no matter what it is.

Failing that, be a monk.

my two cents:

What would you do if you had infinite money? Personally I like playing video games but that's just because it's a fairly cheap and easy escape from the dullness of my current life. If money wasn't an issue? Cooking. I've always loved to. When I was young I didn't carry a blanket or a teenage mutant ninja turtle around, I carried a spatula. WTF right? It took me 3 and half years of engineering and business college to figure out I didn't want to do that shit. I'm going back in the fall for my last year (having sat out 1 and half to take stock and think about what I wanted to do with my life), then I have one goal and one goal only: go here. But yeah, get away from the stuff that brings you down and try new things. Its not going to get better if you stay on the same track and just start complaining.

Honestly, quit your bitching and grow the fuck up. Have some god damn courage, get off your lard ass, and go explore whats out there for you. Your not gonna find it by sitting in front of your computer jerking your weiner 8 times a day.

Your being like a chick. Doing stupid shit to get attention. Your on the inter-web man, sac up.

o and quit your bitching.

There you go right there; wasting time is depressing, and playing video games is a waste of time.

You're young, its doesn't get any better as you get older. Get out there, have sex, drink some beer, go to Amsterdam smoke up. Now is the time when you can do all the stupid stuff and enjoy it.

Now this might seem like dumb advice but if you're not a self motivator here's what you need to do.
1. take a piece of paper and make two lists. list all the things you like to do and list all the things that you currently are doing that you don't like to do. Then make a point of doing what ever it is that you like. I would point out that if you a relatively inactive, like sitting in front of a TV or computer, that you don't pick that one. Do the stuff that involves getting outside and being active with other people.

2. when you get up in the morning, get some tea or coffee and sit down with a piece of paper and think of stuff you need to do that day. Then pick the easiest one on the list, do it, and put that accomplishment in the win column. then pick the next easiest. And make sure you do something off of your fun list.

I know its stupid stuff, but nothing sucks more that inactivity caused by apathy. you sit there and do nothing and because you do nothing you get down and so you do nothing. just get out of the house and do shit. The lists should help you because if you can't think of something you want to do or have to do, just look at the list and it will tell you what to do. I'm sure once you get moving you'll start to feel better. there's nothing worse than the feeling that you get at the end of the day when you realize that you really didn't do anything... I get that feeling on days when I'm at home sick watching TV all day, it makes you feel mentally sick.

AND its sounds like you lack confidence too. There is a little secret to having confidence, confidence is 99% bull shit, its purely a preception that you put forward to other people. if you act meek, ask questions meekly or hessitate in answering then you look like you lack confidence. If you act boldly, answer questions directly, think about what you want to say first then say it with authority you will appear to be full of confidence. You could be full of shit, but people will think you have confidence, and how people preceive you affects how they interact with you. Life is easier if people think you're confident.

Try those things and its a start... have fun you're young..... but seriously get laid, but don't get into a relationship you're obviously not ready for that and someone will just dominate your meek persona.

This is a world where everybody’s gotta do something. Ya know, somebody laid down this rule that everybody’s gotta do something, they gotta be something. You know, a dentist, a glider pilot, a narc, a janitor, a preacher, all that . . . Sometimes I just get tired of thinking of all the things that I don’t wanna do. All the things that I don’t wanna be. Places I don’t wanna go, like India, like getting my teeth cleaned. Save the whale, all that, I don’t understand that . . .

people always use that argument - it's a good one, i suppose...

but in modern psychology, subjectivity is everything. if the guy doesn't know what famine/drought in africa is like, then all he has to compare it to is his previous life experiences. if it feels like it sucks to him now, and it's enough to put him in a depression... then a depression he is in. we don't all have to have a terminal illness or to be impoverished in order to feel 'down'; sometimes it's just a matter of chemical disposition, there neednt even be anything wrong at all.

although i do agree with the general sentiment of "suck it up - only you can make life good for yourself". happiness isn't gonna be handed over on a plate.

Just curious but can somebody tell me what's so wrong with being average? From what I've heard working an average job, raising average kids and having a couple of average hobbies with your average mates and having an average wife and going on average holidays to visit your other average friends and relations is quite rewarding. Not that I know from experience...
Whoa... Can't believe these forums are still kicking.

Has anyone actually mentioned what he needs to do? He needs to turn off the computer and find himself a girlfriend. Once he gets serious about life and has some direction he'll be fine. Military works well for this too.

Get away from the screen. Sitting at a PC and not doing much else is going to be depressing, loafing is bad for your physical health which is bad for your mental health by itself.

Get out of the house. Its a big world out there, get into it and get on with it. Just being outdoors is good for you, doesn't really matter what you're doing if you're getting fresh air and sunlight.

Set small goals, try to achieve them one by one and build confidence. Find one thing you can be really good at and go for it.

Most people are around average in most things, but exceptional in one or two skills, at least for a while.
You don't have to be exceptional to succeed either, its more about hard work and sticking at it, and luck - but you have to be in the game to get the occasional bit of luck.

Girlfriends, maybe, they can be a drag too. Wouldn't worry too much, it'll happen or not. The 'must find wife at high-school' thing is weak TBH.

passions and skills are developed, not found. If you're old enough to call yourself an 'adult', then you're not just going to find something one day that makes you think "Yes! this is what I want to do for the rest of my life!". It just doesn't happen, you have to work for it.

No, I had a gf when I joined the military I joined the military to find direction in my life. I had no idea what I wanted to do so it gave me an opportunity to kind of take a step back and figure out what it is I wanted to be. Even then, it took me three years after I finished my service to figure out that I wanted to go into engineering. I was 27 when I finally made my decision so I can empathize with him to a certain degree. Not everyone has their life figured out when they are in high school. In fact, most don't have a clue until much later in life after they already have a college degree.

First I wanted to go into computer science, then it was geology, then it was naval architecture, then it was international business, and it wasn't until after I explored all those options that I figured out that engineering was for me. Now it's engineering with a masters in business administration or economics

Dude, I'm 20 next month and I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life, it's perfectly natural. My girlfriend's mum likes to reassure me that she never found out what she wanted to do until she was 40.

No, it's normal. Lot's of people start working, hate what they do, and end up going into a second career down the road. Sure, they take a financial hit but it's more important to most people to actually enjoy the work they do.

One of my gf's fathers friends (there really needs to be a better way to say that in English btw ) gave up his job on Wall Street at the age of 45 and decided to become a carpenter. He'd bought an old farm house in the Hamptons, did all the work himself in fixing it up and decided that he really enjoyed working with his hands. Now he does mega dollar renovations. His house is a work of art. Old salvaged floors. Hand built furniture etc.

The thing is, you can't just sit on your bum until you figure it out.

You need to learn how to learn, learn how to bend your mind around tricky stuff, learn how to work, learn how to keep plugging away at dreary crap when there is easy fun stuff to distract you eg BF2.
Much of education is this, not learning specific things.

Then if and when you figure out what you want to do you'll have the above skills and be able to make a go of it.
You might also then have some kind of track record an employer can look at.

I still recommend making delicious cheese. I bought a loaf of semolina bread yesterday, sliced up some granny smith apple and made bruschetta with the apple, danish bleu cheese and honey. Yum.

Almost everyone is average in almost all aspects of their lives.
Live's not a computer game with highscore tables and "achievements".

How about you volunteer for the ambulance or fire brigade?
That'll give you something to do several hours per week and get some insight into other things you may like to pursue.

I read that you can choose to work for the Redningsberedskabet instead of the mandatory military service.
If you already have done the latter, I guess you can still volunteer.

How about foreign aid work?
That'll keep you occupied for a long time.
