One person I've been meaning to promote on here is Paul Kalkbrenner. Fortunately with his latest release, Berlin Calling (soundtrack to a movie he also starred in), I feel like more and more people are seeing the light. I'm not sure if any of his stuff is particularly ground-breaking or paving the way for the future's next big thing, but he's certainly got talent and skill and deserves to be heard.
If you're going to listen to his entire discography, start at the beginning/past and work your way towards recent stuff/present. It just gets better and better as he goes along.

the bass-tones on this 'entropic city' record are fucking immense. cannot believe it. haven't heard such definition in a long time.
it's been too long since ive indulged in dub-techno. all the dubstep and drum'n'bass that has flooded the soundscape recently has bogged me with muddy, lazy basslines and too much saw-wave oscillataaaaaaaahs. this clean, defined bass is incredible. the subtle changes in tone and little shifts up and downscale really give the record a sense of... depth. it has a spatial quality to it. i imagine it would be the sort of LP that could really blow your mind if it was properly encoded to 5.1. i'm trying it on my living room hi-fi now (empty house ftw) and it sounds amazing.

I think it's an amazing project, worth a listen.This is the music we made for the opera “Tomorrow, in a Year”, commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma. The work is based off of Charles Darwin’s On the origin of the species, his notebooks and other randomly selected Darwin related literature and articles, for example The Selfish Gene and The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins, Annie’s Box by Randal Keynes, How to Read Darwin by Mark Ridley, and Emma Darwin: The Inspirational Wife of a Genius by Edna Healy. Originally The Knife were commissioned to make the music, but to try out a more collaborative way of working they invited Mt. Sims and Planningtorock.
i thought it was awful, and the album and performance both individually got panned by critics. it was a pretentious mess, half of it was physically difficult to listen to because it was just machine tones and squeals being thrown at you non-stop for 4-5 minutes... without any visual element, i just felt like a bit of an idiot listening to birdsong and little beeps.

Currently reliving the instant-classic under-appreciated DIY by Dousk. It starts off almost New Age-ish, but don't let that fool you, and stick with it. An amazing ride.

I don't get dub-step. I can listen to and enjoy 99% of all electronic music (can't stand that Dutch/Italian/Belgian Euro-Trance crap). Yet dub-step eludes me. I can tolerate it, but I don't get any enjoyment out of it. I sat there thinking, "How is this quality? How is this a 'real secret'?"

I don't think that's a valid excuse though. I love everything else electronic that comes out of England and Germany and Norway, even some French stuff. But this dub step is all
