Introduction

If you do not have cod1 right now, go buy it. Buy two, in case one breaks. COD1 was worth it. If they modernized the graphics and re-released it exactly the same, I’d pay 50 bucks for it. It was that kind of game.

Gameplay Overview

Call of Duty was a first person shooter set in world war two. Think that’s an unoriginal idea? The single player wasn’t your average, “play a boring tutorial and then some levels to get to know the game and then permanently migrate to multiplayer” kind of game. No. Cod1 was heavily focused on teamwork. However, each countries missions were played differently. Nowadays, most games have a bunch of repetitive missions and some bizarre SP game modes that get boring quickly, like stealth. In COD1, when you played as an American, you were always playing the support role. It was up to you to protect your buddies, and count on them to protect you. When you stormed France as a British SAS commando, you played with weapons suiting the role. When the British squad was a normal infantry regiment, you got typical infantry weapons. A Lee-enfield and a Bren. When your squad gets transferred to the SAS, you play in small groups, with Sten’s and snipers, completely changing the way you fight. Changing your fighting style wasn’t hard, but since it was often necessary, you did it. When you go to Russia, no one was looking out for you. You fought fiercly and savagely, or you died. Simple as that. The game didn’t tell you too. The NPC’s didn’t recommend you adopt any styles. You did what you needed to in order to survive. COD1 wasn’t based on war. It was war.

Setting and Plot: World war 2. Welcome to a little town called Hell, Normandy. The single player missions kick off in a hardcore American training camp, in lovely rural Virginia. Tired? Deal with it. Then, the campaign soon shifts to Normandy. You’re put on your own, as a pathfinder. You’re alone, with nothing but your objectives. You see a small town up ahead, through the fields. A young German soldier doesn’t seem to see you. You hesitate, and accidentally get his attention. You fire at his head, just as he reaches for his rifle leaning on the nearby tree, and he falls on the dirt road. He looks about 19. After fighting through Normandy, and certain special operations in Austria and the Bavarian alps, we shift to Britain. Welcome, chaps. From glider insertions, to capturing bridges, to defending bridges, you get transferred to the SAS. You are ordered to sneak onto a dam, and sabotage it. Then, violent yet exciting chase scenes ensue. You flee the dam, ride into a German controlled airport, and fight your way to the other end of the airstrip, where a flakvierling gun sits in wait. You soon escape after shooting down a squadron of German Stuka’s, some before they even have a chance to take off the tarmac. Then, its time for a vacation. After hijacking and killing the crew of a small German patrol boat, you are entitled to a one day luxury cruise aboard the Battleship Tirpitz. After fighting your way through the entire ship, you and Captain price prepare to leave the boilers. You leave him for a second, and set the charges. You come back, and find that price is dead. You shoot your way out the catwalks with stolen German weaponry, and escape. Now, comrade, its time for the best part of the campaign. Russia. After a terrifying boatride down the river Volga, your boat with its cargo of 45 humans crosses the river. Upon arriving at the dock, you are pushed out of the boat along with your fellow Russians, trying to escape. You are soon pushed forward out of the throng of bodies. Suddenly, you hear a terrifying wail. A stuka screams down, and you are thrown out of the boat. You look back, and the dock is smoldering, while the boat sinks in the harbour. Including you, maybe six people got out. You run to the Commissars giving out weapons. The one with the megaphone repeatedly tells you to go in pairs and says “The one with the rifle shoots! When the one with the rifle gets killed, the one without the rifle picks up the rifle and he shoots!”. You run to the men giving out weaponry. Up the hill, Stalingrad awaits. German MG42’s waste your comrades by the thousands. The sky is dark grey, with some ruined and flaming buildings making for an apocalyptic skyline. You push forward, hoping for something suitable. A commissar pulls you aside, shoves something into your hand, and directs you towards the German emplacements above. You look at what he gave you, what you are to storm the hill with. It is one 5 bullet clip of ammo. You charge the hill, while comrades are getting killed. After finding some fellow soldiers, you fight your way into Stalingrad. The Germans are still gunning the beach. Suddenly, a young sergeant reaches head command with his phone. There are 10 seconds of silence. Then, an enormous barrage of Russian artillery razes the entire riverbank. You charge into the city, to red square. You crouch behind a line of your soldiers. You wait for a terrifying 5 seconds. And then, a commissar blows a whistle. The entire line charges. Sad Russian music plays in the background. You are aware you’re comrades will be wasted. But if you look back, or retreat, you will be shot. By your own men. So you charge. You’re comrades are shredded. Stumbling forward, you grab a dead soldiers Mosin-Nagent and hide next to a destroyed fountain. After flanking and sniping, artillery fire razes the German lines holding the square. The next few missions are frantic charges through the destroyed ruins of Stalingrad. After some winter-time scouting missions, you and Sergeant Pavlov, in one of the most famous and successful moves in the Battle of Stalingrad, biggest battle of the war, you and Pavlov’s squad hold the apartment against huge odds. Then, after a brief stint attacking German tank repair factories in Poland, shortages in the tank groups mean you get transferred to the T-34-35 extended tank regiments. You fight in the country, and then storm a small town. After, you arrive at your final three missions. Back with the Yanks, you take defended bunkers in Bastogne, Belgium. Then, you and your British buddies go into snowy forests in order to take out a traveling V2 convoy. Then, the ground finale. You and the Russians storm Berlin, and take the Reichstag. You fight Nazis and Soldiers, with heavy weaponry, and desperate attitudes. Finally, you get to the top of the Reichstag, and raise the flag of Mother Russia. The war is over.

The Little Things

The good things about cod1 were how much emphasis Activision put into the smaller details. For example, let’s compare the function of a Cod1 pistol to a COD2-6 pistol. In COD 2 through six, you could hold two primary weapons, including a pistol. Pistols were used as primary weapons, or, just as unrealistically, to get “humiliation” kills. In COD1, you got two primary weapons, a sidearm, and grenades. The pistol was pretty weak, but did decent damage and shot fast. The pistol was a peace of mind tool in Cod1. You feel confident knowing that, if you run out of ammo, you have your trusty colt or Luger to bring into action. Also, on weapons, the logo’s that were on those weapons in the war existed. Thirdly, small realistic details, like scoped rifles and the M1 Garand’s loading style, for instance. The cod loading style stayed constant throughout the entire series. In cod1, the M1 Garand, like the real life Garand, could not be reloaded very quickly without first expending the clip, presenting a tactical disadvantage. Also, like In WW2, scoping a rifle interferes with the loading. The scopes on the Kar98k, and the Springfield, like in real life, were in front of the magazine. Therefore, you couldn’t load them normally; you had to separate the bullets in the five bullet clip and reload one at a time. With the mosin, though, the scope was positioned just right, allowing you to reload five bullets at a time, normally, and making it the best sniper in the game. Also like in real life, the PPSH had a brutal rate of fire. Wars are won by the smaller battles…

Weapons: A brilliantly enjoyable selection for each faction.

In cod1, realisticness was key. That was what the series was so loved for, its accuracy and good game play. So, each country could only used their own countries weapons, with the exception of the British, who used the Springfield with a scope as their sniper, like the Americans.

American Airborne:

M1A1 Carbine- The carbine, in contrast to the one featured in COD5, was one of the least popular cod1 weapons. To be realistic, since America was mass producing weapons at the time, the carbine gets a cheap retractable metal stock instead of a wooden one. In campaign, the medium-to-long ranged fighting often presented in the American missions made the carbine handy, because of its rate of fire and available ammo. However, America specialized in support weapons. And since the garand has less ammo but a longer range and more damage in multiplayer, the garand is more often used. The multi-player maps are quite large, some of them.
M1 Garand- 8 bullet clip, but does damage very similar to that of the bolt-actions. The semi-automatic Garand cannot be reloaded, rather, you must empty the clip first. However, the reload is very fast upon emptying the clip.
Thompson M1A1- This gun had decent damage, a fast rate of fire, a modest thirty bullet clip, and an unfortunately large muzzle clip, and huge recoil. All in all, the most basic and straightforward SMG in the game. However, you had to close the distance between targets by charging them to eliminate the effects of recoil and use this gun to its maximum potential. It had two fire modes, semi-automatic and automatic, allowing it to be used at longer distances, but not effectively.
Springfield Scoped- Not much can be said about this gun. One firing mode, single bullet reload, unsteady when scoped. The same stats as the Kar98k, basically, except that the Kar98k does slightly more damage. All in all, the worst of the snipers. Its scope is very easy to get used to though, with a standard crosshair print.
Browning Automatic Rifle- Two firing modes, fast and Slow Automatic. In cod5, it could only be fired in slow automatic. In cod1, Fast Automatic is great for medium ranged combat, and slow automatic makes it great for supporting your allies, without wasting ammo. It does massive damage, like all the Light Machine Guns. Although, it only had twenty shots. So, it needed to be used carefully.
M2 Frag Grenade- Same stats as all grenades, except this grenade adopts an egg shape, like the british grenade.

German Wehrmacht/Kriegsmarine/SS: German weapons and equipment were all tremendously powerful or technologically advanced.

MP40- A reliable, nice, yet odd SMG that had very different characteristics than most SMG’s. It had a fairly slow rate of fire, slightly lower than that of the Thompson. However, it was faster than in cod5. It had a very low muzzle climb, and a low recoil. It had a normal 32 bullet clip, and was jet black. It was decent, but not widely used in multiplayer. It fired in Automatic and Semiautomatic modes. Most commonly found campaign weapon.
Kar98K- A solid rifle with nice damage and great range, and decent sights. It was good for long range combat, or medium ranged combat. It loaded with a normal 5 bullet clip. It was bolt action. However, it was the worst rifle in the game. The Mosin-Nagent had the same characteristics, except it had a beautifully tiny iron sight, allowing great sniping. And the Lee Enfield had twice the ammo. The kar98k was the second most commonly found rifle in the game.
MP44- The worlds first assault rifle. It had the damage of an LMG, well, slightly lower, the clip of an SMG, a low muzzle climb, an amazing angel, and fired both automatically and semi-automatically allowing it to be used like a Garand. It could play the roles of SMG, LMG, semi-automatic rifle, and carbine. It was very good. In the campaign, it wasn’t available until it was invented, but functioned magnificently.
Scoped Kar98k- Loaded one bullet at a time and did slightly more damage then the Springfield.
MG42- The only machinegun featured in the game. It had huge damage, an amazing rate of fire, bloody large recoil, and a muzzle-flash so large it blocked out half the screen. It could mow down regiments in seconds. It was only found mounted. It could not be chosen as equipment.
FG42- The deadliest portable weapon in the game. It had damage slightly less than that of a sniper, and a rate of fire only beat by the MG42 and the PPSH. It had outrageously retarded muzzle climb, though, when firing full automatic through the sniper scope. Oh, did I mention? It got a sniper scope. It also fired semi-automatic. It could be found in single player, if you knew where to look, but firing in full automatic was such a waste. It fired too fast. It reloaded really quickly too. In multiplayer, it could not be chosen as equipment, but rather was scattered around the maps due to cheapness.
Panzerfaust- With an iron site useable at mid-range, and massive damage, this anti-tank weapon was pure power. It could shatter a tiger in two hits, and a panzer in one. It was one use, though. And, when you fired it, it made the most horrible shrieking noise before exploding. In multiplayer, a few boxes were scattered around the maps. Each held several panzerfausts. You would take one and it would act as a primary weapon. Then, you would either blow something up or melee someone with it.
Stielhandgranate- A stick grenade.

USSR-

Mosin-Nagent- The funniest bolt-action in the game. In single player, picking on up wasn’t worth it. It had a very accurate iron sight, but was the same as the Kar98k otherwise. However, only 2 or 3 bullets remained in each rifle you picked up, due to ammo scarcity! So, it was unreliable in SP. In multiplayer, due to a huge amount of starter ammo, it worked decently well in the Russian maps.
Scoped Mosin-Nagent- Could reload five bullets at a time and had good accuracy. Probably the best of the snipers because of this.
PPSH- This thing was a lawn mower. It had crappy damage, but a totally unnecessarily insane rate of fire. It fired automatically and semiautomatically, though it was only really decent in automatic modes. Best SMG in the game.
RGD-33 A rubbery, orange stick grenade that resembled a chew toy.

British SAS

Sten- Crappiest SMG in the game. Its rate of fire was good, but it only had 32 bullet clips. Also, it did lower damage then the Thompson. And it had bad recoil. And the semi-automatic mode put you at a disadvantage.
Lee-Enfield- Best bolt-action in the game. The iron-sights were comparable to those of the Kar, but it had an amazing double clip, allowing you to have ten bullets instead of five. Very useful.
Bren LMG- This gun had the best melee in the game. It was always an instant kill in melee, but the melee took forever. It is a large gun. It has good damage, moderate recoil, a good fire rate, but its bizarre clip that pointed up instead of down decreased visibility on the right side of the screen. It was good in semi-automatic and full automatic firing modes. It also had nice range.
Scoped Springfield- Same stats as the American version.
M1 Frag Grenade- Basically the Mills bomb. Larger, whiter, and older-looking than the m2.

Great article, cool stuff!

As a professional CoD1 player, do you think that you might be biased or enjoy it a little bit more than us public players?
I excitedly await your reply.

cod1 was just a playable version of the movie "enemy at the gates" or it might have been "saving private ryan" which one was which or am I thinking of medal of honor?

i'd like to nominate myself for a wiki team badge also, as i genuinely believe this is my greatest work yet. if i may say so, i'd call it my magnum opus. i trained hard and honed my technique for several months on smaller, more trivial interests in my life, viz. airplanes, weaponry, medieval-themed fantasy roleplaying- and combined all of my experience into this comprehensive review.

thanks again, feel free to pm if you have any questions. i'll try to translate my pro knowledge into common understanding.

I can't remember whether it was the UO edition or whether it was in vCoD. But they had simple yet gameplay enhancing features like the crosshair getting wider when you moved/waved the gun around the screen with the mouse (even if you're still), the scopes on the snipers would sway depending on stance (prone being the best) and guns actually had a decent amount of recoil and you needed to properly place shots, and weapons even had firing modes. Why the fuck did they get rid of firing modes from CoD 2 onwards. Semi-auto mode is just awesome in so many situations.

It was a huge step back in terms of the small gameplay features like that when CoD 2 came out. But that was the way forward for the series, they had to make it console friendly. CoD 2 was also a launch title for the 360. Before patches it was so bad on the PC that it didn't even have PB and you could use the console commands to create your own texture hacks and such. I remember how many people were pissed off about PC CoD 2 on the IW forums.

CoD 1/UO was the first game I played which had everything I wanted. It had different stances (crouch/prone/stand) it had leaning, and it had ironsights (I was like holy fuck yes when I first saw that)
