Gimmicky? Features-wise it's your standard fare gaming mouse. two thumb buttons, two sensitivity buttons, high dpi range and such. Where it shines is in being really comfortable, reliable, and not having any wireless lag. Beats the logitech "peanut" G5/mx518 design for sure.
In reading reviews (I know they are not everything) reliability was one of the worse things. I think most of those were talking about wireless mode. Do you have to install special software with it?
earlier models had all kinds of troubles, lots of horrible bugs. By the time I bought it 6 months ago those were all fixed and revised

Could I get a more comprehensive opinion on the G500? It looked like the 518 v2 so I figured I would get it the next time my mouse died, but if you could give some specifics on the MX518 -> G500 transition that would be sweet.
Here is my "transition":

I've gone through 2 mx518, both had failures on the left clicking after around 2.5 - 3 years of gaming.  In total I've used mx518's for 5+ years before getting the G500.  I had planned on getting another mx518, but saw a deal on the G500 for $39 at bestbuy.  I've had this G500 now for 5 months.
~  Price:  the G500 is listing about $14 more than the mx518 on newegg.
~  Size:  the G500 is slightly fatter than the mx518.  It took a couple weeks of using it before it felt "normal" during gaming.  I don't even notice the difference now and it feels fine.
~  Grip:  the G500 doesn't have the rubberized sides on it that the mx518 has.  I miss that as it had better grip.  The G500 has a rough textured plastic feel.
~  Wheel:  the G500's wheel is not as crisp as the mx518.  The G500 wheel's roll is softer and has maybe .5mm longer throw per click - although I've never had 2 mice feel exactly the same.  the G500's wheel button (mouse 3) is definitely sloppier and not as crisp.  this may be in part due to the G500 having wheel unlock and  left/right wheel side clicking that the mx518 doesn't have.
~  Wheel unlock:  the G500 has a button below the wheel that unlocks the wheel so it can free spin.  This is not something you want in FPS gaming, although I've used it a few times web browsing or on pdf's pages that were very long.
~  Features:  some other features the G500 has is a removable weight tray to add weights that come with it so you can adjust the weight of the mouse.  I run with no weights as i like my mouse to be as light as possible.  The G500 has a laser sensor vs the mx518's optical.  the both work fine and I cant tell a difference in tracking on my func surface 1030 gaming pad.  the G500 has visible led bars showing you what sensitivity level you have the mouse set at which is nice.  The +/- sensitivity buttons are together on the top left side of the mouse so you can change dpi on the fly - this is a better layout than the mx518.  To access all the functions you need to install the G500 software.  Once installed you can custom change each of the 5 sensitivity levels to anything you like between 200 - 5700 dpi.  At 5700 dpi BadCompany2's tank turret speed is sweet!!  The G500's software also allows macro programming, and its very programmable.  I once programmed a bf2 solo tv macro and it worked ridiculously good.  The G500 has onboard memory so all profiles / sensitivities and macros are saved right on the mouse.  You can then plug the mouse into another computer and it works the same without having the software..
~  The G500 is a good mouse and the only faults I can find with it are the lack of rubberized grips and slightly sloppier mouse wheel.

I actually picked up a G500 (also getting another mx518 under warranty)

Likes
* It has texture for a better grip and seems a bit bigger.
* I like how the wheel can be made completely smooth or to have clicks
* good tracking
* dpi controls are out of the way (whereas on mx518 they were near the wheel)
* Adjustable weight (not sure if it is a benefit yet, but you get a cool tin with it )

Dislikes
* Mapping the middle thumb button in bfbc2 was a pain, ended up mapping it to a keystroke (required set point).

Bit late as it seems you have got a new mouse.

But I purchased a Mamba a few months back and havent had a problem at all. Not even the supposed mouse wheel squeak. I dont know if other wireless mouses have the plug in and use as a corded mouse while charging thing, but it is pretty much the best feature in a wireless mouse ever. If you lose power, it takes literally less than 5 seconds to unplug the dock and plug it in the front of the mouse.
