I saw this and read the front page, I'll go back and read the rest later. But it just makes sense, small business is the vital organ of our country and needs help. Wallmart, fast food chains and all other business rape and pillage our ability to keep our neighbors surviving and in turn keep ourselves surviving..

Yes, supporting those businesses less able and capable is a winning idea. While supporting the underdog is pretty much a national tradition, rewarding inferior businesses at your own expense is just silly. If the local guy provides better service and quality than the local Walmart then sure, I'll buy from him. Handing him my business just because he's not Walmart is just as asinine as the people who voted for Obama because he was 'not Bush'.

Im not buying shit from walmart anymore because the quality of their chinese made products seems to have deteriorated over the years.  I bought a cutlery set a few weeks ago and the god damn knives started collecting rust in the sink over night

Hmm Bush didn't run against Obama but I digress.

Really it's what should be keeping you in business and raise up your community. If you support your local business, you will be improving your own situation. All Wallmart does is open up big stores and undercut everyone to make money for the main company, they don't care about your community and you really should.

Do you like going to local Restaurants or chains?

I don't buy stuff from big chain stores because the quality is usually horrible.

Dunno.

Most small businesses benefit only the owners.  There's too many Mom & Pop stores where the owners make $200k per year, while they hire four clerks to run the place and pay them $20k per year with no benefits.

Al least Walmart has lower prices and has a health plan.

Coin flip really...standardization of cheap choiceless stuff versus inflated prices but better service.

I still don't understand why Walmart is hated so much.  Unless it's because it has no unions and therefore is a democrat punching bag.

Albeit it has all the features they are looking for: lower prices = higher standard of living, and more jobs.

Versus a Mom & Pop which makes the owner rich with no health plan.

Seems like they got that one reversed.

And yeah, I know it doesn't say "democrats" in there, but Walmart is a democrat punching bag.

I'm a huge supporter of local restaurants. Truth be told I don't know of a ton of small businesses in DC.

I wouldn't buy products like culinary from WalMart either but getting several gallon jugs for Gatorade for a little more than a the price of a bottle from a vending machine is a strong incentive to for me to visit a WalMart.

I frequent both. Whether it's a local restaurant or a chain makes no difference to me.

You do know you're using the same argument made by local farmers who farm in areas not big enough to support them right? There are farmers on the east end of Long Island who aren't competitive due to the fact that there aren't enough of them and therefor they have a hard time sharing equipment during harvest season. They've been reduced to living off of tourism and selling their produce on the side of the road. Is me buying potatoes from one of those stands better than buying a sack in the supermarket? Hardly. In most cases the quality is lower but my gf makes me stop at them every summer so she can eat her 'farm fresh' produce In this case it's nothing more than an effective marketing gimmick.

Now, instead of just saying 'Walmart is evil' or whatever else you want to do to convince people of your case, how about you give them reasons for doing so? Whether I get my dinner at the local Outback or Jack's Steakhouse (look it up, expensive and awesome), there's hardly any guarantee that the majority of the profit made will stay in my local community.

You're making a case for localized protectionism and all protectionism does is drive up prices, reduce competition and limit consumer choices. It sounds good to those without an understanding of economics, which is why these 'movements' generally originate from the left.

I have a can opener that doesn't open and a wine bottle opener that falls in hald because a little pin wasn't set right. Both from walmart.

Walmart is spawn of satan. They are destroying domestic manufactoring as well as ma and pa retailers.

John, you can't beat walmarts value if you discount the consequences and the quality. So, people like you will probably always buy from walmart, because you got suckered.

Modern capatalism is making something that has the appearance and packaging of a quality product, but that fails after a few uses. They are banking americans are too lazy to save their receipts, too busy to return a defective product and too simple to realize that by supporting such businesses we are securing the death of american industy.

Shame on us.

No, I actually haven't stepped inside a Walmart in over five years. I usually shop at a local supermarket for my food because it's conveniently located three blocks from my apartment as well. Sometimes I'll shop at BJ's instead. I'll go to Home Depot first for my hardware needs unless it's something complicated and I need better customer service. For home goods, it's usually Target. For clothes, well there's not really any 'local' clothing stores anymore anyway.

Point is, I don't shop at big box stores normally because they aren't convenient to my location. But I also don't discriminate against them if they're in the area. As in all things, you get what you pay for and expecting quality from Walmart is just lolz. Do you really think that I, the guy that has his entire investment plan for life laid out on this very here forum, to not understand that paying more for quality and durability is always the best choice? Problem is that the quality and durability isn't usually found in local stores either. For that kind of thing I'd rather just shop online tbh.

There's a great sushi place in D.C. called Uni A Sushi Place...  some really good stuff...

Another good one in D.C. is Sushi Aoi.

It seems like Arlington is a gold mine for good small restaurants as well -- like Ray's the Steaks.

Sushi Aoi is pretty good, I haven't been to Uni. There is good sushi though.

Ray's is awesome as well. Next time you're in Arlington check out their sister business Ray's Hell Burger, their burgers are divine. President approved! (Yep, Obama ate there... they got so much business after that they had to move to a bigger location).

The DC area really does have some great local restaurants. It's also the birthplace of motherfuggin' Five Guys. So even though now it's a chain by all standards I still feel like I'm 'eating local'

If it's anything like here, you won't see much difference in price or quality from department/supermarkets to the small local businesses. The biggest difference is convenience, a large shop is 1 stop, get everything you need pay and go home. Where the local business will require multiple stops, with multiple transactions.

I bought a set of these.  I fell like a ninja when I use them and they're sharp as hell.

OK well Walmart and all other chains get breaks via property and state taxes cause they "Create" Jobs. Then they undercut other businesses in the area with the same products because they get said cuts. Then when the Tax Benefits start to elevate they just build an other wallmart close enough to the first one that people will go to.

Basically Most chains work like Globalization and they're a race to the bottom of livable wage.

I agree that local businesses are important but come on. I doubt a Korean grocer in NYC will give employees the same benefits that Whole Foods does.
