Maybe they were to far away? I don't know how far away they were or the range of a mortar but before they were in range of the Japs in the building they were hit by artillery. Was there AA preventing airstrikes?

There's a reason they are called jarheads, the frontal assault is always the preferred method of attack for the Marines because it shows off their bravado. It's why they always take horrific casualties anytime they fight, not because they are sent into the most deadly places, which they would have you believe. The standard Marine fights with outdated weapons and tactics compared to the Army. The Navy would rather spend its money and time building new aircraft carriers that it doesn't have the manpower to staff.-Sh1fty- wrote:

Standard engagement: Army platoon contacts an enemy platoon, they dig in and call in artillery or air support. If in the same situation, the Marines would charge the other platoon head on. Sure, it sounds cooler to be in the charge but it's completely inefficient and a waste of lives.

well, Id have to say that there is no real "standard" engagement. staying mobile is alway preffered over hunkering in. one thing I noticed for sure in Iraq though fighting with marines was their lack of communication between elements during fire fights. no shortage of violence of action though.
also, marines seem to have less of an ability to properly aquire a target before shooting. the ramp on my old bradley could attest to that.
