Guys, the E3300 is a full-fledged Core 2 Duo with a little less cache (1MB as opposed to 2~6). It's a really powerful processor.

CapnNismo wrote:

Windows 7, of course.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

The E3300 is a 2.5GHz 1MB cache CPU, right? In that case it'll be perfect for HTPC duties. It'll have no problem decoding, well, anything.

Can the intel GPU do DXVA?

Yeah, dual-core, too. It's really far too powerful for my needs, but it's the cheapest CPU I can get my hands on.

And I have no idea about what the IGP can do, I never planned on using it as I have a spare HD2400 lying about that I was going to put in it. It's mandatory, as my TV hates VGA.

That's of less importance now, however, as I e-mailed the reseller and told them to cancel the purchase. I'll be returning it to them for a full refund, and buying an ASUS P5G41-M for a tenner more instead. It has both optical audio output and DVI on-board, so I won't have to use either a separate graphics card, nor an S/PDIF riser.

I allmost wish I had the use for a HTPC media centre

Looks fun to put a system together that is so compact...
My current HTPC-ish P4 Compaq which I mounted on a plexi-plate has a xbox hueg PSU, IDE cables and old agp gfx card that takes up space...

oh well.. maybe when I move away from home and my old TV breaks which leads to a new HDMI compatible monitor

EDIT: Anyone tell me if it's possible to get a decent quality small PSU that will supply sufficient power for the low end i3?
All I can find is a regular sized OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W modular...

Oh, yeah, that board had HDMI, not DVI.

I generally think about them as one the same, the signals are compatible anyhow.

i knew i'd seen it somewhere. the NVS 295's we get are dual DP, with dongles for the DVI. the bastard's a re sending the passive ones though.

let me know how that works for eyefinity, thx!

I think I would have gotten a better / second GFX card instead of wasting that much on an adapter tbh
