This has been discussed recently because there is a proposal to remove 'open carry' in California.  There is a huge amount of back and forth bickering between advocates and naysayers.  Personally I think it is stupid to openly carry an unloaded gun and it is at least as equally stupid to try to outlaw it.  Any other opinions?

Arizona baby is the model state.  If your only option is to open carry?  So be it.

can I roll around with a shotgun in the trunk of my car as long as I have the ammo seperate.  Ive been told the only way Im able to do that would be to go to and from a shooting range

We can roll with a loaded shotgun on the front seat. Or an AR on the street.

I'm not sure on your state's laws.  Florida says yes.

*edit:
The reason I have a conceal permit.  It takes the guesstimate out of it.

It has to be separate from the ammo and one or the other has to be locked.

I'm sure the gangstas follow this one to the letter...great crime prevention! /sarcasm.

IMO
Outlawing carry--poor choice
Forcing unloaded carry--poor choice

unloaded carry--except as a political statement, pretty dumb.  (i.e. how long would it take to prep the firearm to actually defend yourself?)

Well, there was the church about 6 miles from where I sit.  An active shooter was stopped by a volunteer security person with a concealed carry permit/gun.

One of my friends was murdered in class.
Another one of my friends was stabbed at work, in the mall.

Bad stuff happens in many places.  If people want to prepare for bad situations, and aren't a threat to others, I'm all for it.

Oh, I've all ready pulled a shotty on some guy in the backyard in the early AM hours.  He left.

What reasons are there for someone to carry an assault rifle while going to buy some coffee? (talking about normal law abiding citizens here)

That's a reason. But is there a reason why someone might want to carry an assault rifle when going to buy some whammy burgers?

Bad guys wouldn't really want to rob anyone seeing an M4 slinging. Just like the Swiss militia.

One reason for being able to legally carry a rifle in public would be emergency/disaster situations. In such events you don't want your rifle in a case. We have a law that protects us from the confiscation bullshit that happened during Katrina.

Why is pistol not posing enough thread for a bad guy? Bad guys think that they rather get shot with 9.00 than 5.56?

Ok. What weaponry you think should be legalized (edit: mean for open carry)? And why, if you don't mind me asking.

Actually, what guns you would like to see legalized for open carry?

Should be legal?
We can already open carry rifles if we want (as pictured above). Almost nobody does it though, at least not as a daily practice. People will call the police and the police may show up. There might also be a really anti-gun person who claims you were handling the firearm and felt threatened. Its not worth the hassle to most people. There are people who keep rifles in their vehicles though.

Whats nice about good gun laws is that good people that are trying to do right don't get "busted" by police for some silly technicality. The concealed weapon without a permit is going to solve an issue that many have not liked for awhile. If you're in a vehicle and the officer considered it concealed he can charge you with it, even if you say it wasn't concealed. Or lets say I have a permit and my wife doesn't. If the pistol is between the seats he can say she had access and charge her with carrying a concealed weapon. With the new law, it doesn't matter, concealed is legal.

I don't think local, state or federal government should restrict carrying firearms and that includes rifles.

besides, it's a rifle... not an assault rifle

I live in Australia and I can't imagine what it would be like to live in a place where everyone carried guns because they're worried that some lunatic is going to pull one on you.

It's happened here of course (Like the Port Arthur Massacre) but it's so rare to warrant carrying guns around.

I dunno, the whole concept here in our society just seems unnatural.
