CIA, FBI, Home land security and there are more I just can't think of them right now. Majority of these agency that have recently been created are a knee jerk reaction to 9/11 and fear mongering.
Bottom line is you now have alot of salaries and a bigger government that we'll never be able to get rid of. Considering that they're based on "if nothing happens, we obviously doing our job. But we can NOT disclose what we have prevented", not based on "Ok here are the things that we have actually stopped".
I need to start an Anti suicide for children group. Where people pay me lots of money to have a 90% sucess rate, that way I make lots of money and if a kid kills himselves I can say that was part of the 10%.
The 1947 National Security Act established the CIA.
The FBI was established in 1908 as the Bureau of Investigation (BOI). Its name was changed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1935.
Homeland Security...
Agencies:
* United States Citizenship and Immigration Services – Processes citizenship, residency, and asylum requests from foreigners
This one has been around (albeit as the INS) since 1891 or 1924 depending on where you view the start point.
* U.S. Customs and Border Protection – Staff border checkpoints, collect tariffs, and patrol the border
"Responding to an urgent need for revenue following the American Revolutionary War, the First United States Congress passed, and President George Washington, signed the Tariff Act of July 4, 1789, which authorized the collection of duties on imported goods. Four weeks later, on July 31, the fifth act of Congress established the United States Customs Service and its ports of entry."
* U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Long-term investigations of border violations
ICE is rather redundant.
* Transportation Security Administration – Responsible for aviation security (domestic and international, most notably conducting passenger screenings at airports), as well as land and water transportation security
Created in response to 9/11, so one so far...
* United States Coast Guard – Maritime security, national defense, maritime mobility, and protection of natural resources (assigned to Department of the Navy during times of war or at the president's direction)
"Founded by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Cutter Service on 4 August 1790, it lays claim to being the United States' oldest continuous seagoing service."
* Federal Emergency Management Agency – Disaster preparedness, response, and recovery
Created by Presidential Order on 1 April 1979.
* United States Secret Service – Protective services for important officials and protection of the U.S. currency
"With a reported one third of the currency in circulation being counterfeit, the Secret Service was commissioned on July 5, 1865, in Washington, D.C. as the "Secret Service Division" of the Department of the Treasury and was originally tasked with the suppression of counterfeiting."
All easily found on wikipedia. In short, you don't have a fucking clue as to what you are talking about.
