Alcohol has a surtax attached to pay for increased healthcare (in some states) as well as patrols.  Bars also have heavier licensing fees than other businesses.

Tobacco has the same kind of thing going on.

Now, they'll tell you it's because they want to deter folks from buying the product, but ultimately isn't it for better health, and therefore the cost benefits that result?

So why isn't there a fat tax?

I think it might be built into the system somewhere, but where?

I think its based within taxing companies that provide junk food.  Junk food has higher profit margins than a fruit and vegetable grower.  Why?

Well, they'll argue they buy the vegetables and make them tasty.  Aka, putting more a more value add into the product, therefore it'll comand a higher price.  But then why would the profit margin % be higher?  Shouldn't be if that's true.

But many companies will grow their own for production, or will spin off a company to keep an exclusive supply.

So if they make more money, more tax to the government...conspiracy to make us fat?

So why isn't there a fat tax?  Or is upcoming after 2014 when somehow Obamacare enables folks to not worry about healthcare as much?

The taxes really aren't designed to deter usage.  I mean, they say that, but the real reason they tax these things is to help pay for rehabilitation costs.

I suppose you could make the argument that a similar tax could be imposed on unhealthy foods to help pay for the illnesses related to consuming too much of them.

I'm not fat, nor know anybody that's fat to ask this....

But don't most fat-fat (obese) people live on welfare, so really it'd be a tax that just needlessly circulates money around, and even loses money because of the overhead for managing it.

Assuming that the "to deter usage" argument is BS.

You can get them in Chinatown for like $5. Not sure about the quality though. I've spoken to a few smokers and they tell me its much more worse.

It varies from state to state. I don't think any other place in America besides NYC sells a pack of cigarettes for $10.

NYC tax, New York State Tax, Federal Tax etc... One of the first things Mayor Bloomberg did when he became Mayor was to slap a $2 tax on cigs if you buy them in the city. Yes, he's a fuckhead.

Of course. There's really no one more assholish than non-smoking crusaders.

Meh let people decide what they want to do in their life. Politicians will spew whatever BS they can to make money for the government. You must admit John, it's not a bad way to make money.

Pretty much...  My city just recently banned all smoking inside restaurants and bars.

Granted, as a non-smoker, I have to admit that it makes things more enjoyable for me, but I still believe business owners should be able to decide for themselves if they want to allow smoking or not.

I don't mind that. I don't want to smell cigarette smoke when I'm eating either, nor do I want to walk out of a bar reeking of it. If I'm in 'mixed company' I always make sure that I'm downwind of everyone else. It's just courtesy.

All that being said, I'm not fucking up anyones life but my own by smoking so they can all eat a dick.

Lol word. That's why restaurants have a non-smoking section. Don't like the smell of smoke in a bar? Why go to a fucking bar you pussy. When you're drinking you don't give a fuck anyway.

Of course it's a fantastic revenue stream. Tax people who are addicted to a product more difficult to quit than heroin. Doesn't make it right, in fact it makes it perverse and bullying.

They were sent to every retailer that has a Tobacco license. It's fucking disgusting when walk into a store and the first thing you see is that poster. Turns you off from the idea of buying anything to eat/drink. The city sent letters with the posters saying that if any of the 2 out of 3 posters were not up the retailer can be fined up to $5000. And if the city can get money out of you, they will. That is some fucked up shit.

Pretty much...  I was floored when I found out a few years ago that Dublin...  yes Dublin...  banned smoking from all bars there.

I mean...  what's next?  The Irish banning drinking from bars?...  lol

They raised the cost on the license to sell smokes from $100 to $1000 this year too so my favorite bagel shop no longer sells cigs. It was my one stop shopping morning experience. Now I'm stuck going to the gas station/Dunkin Donuts for coffee and cigs.

Wow they actually went through with it? Unbelievably fucking stupid.

I remember a letter being sent a year ago to our Newsstand saying they might raise the price of the tobacco license to $500/1000/2500/5000 depending on how much revenue you pull in from tobacco products. Never thought that it would actually go through.
