They don't need to make DDR3 cheaper, just make DDR2 cost more so you don't see the point in buying it over DDR3.

I'm so tired of my parents(mainly mom)being so cheap. If it weren't for that, I would have had a new rig ~6-8 months ago. Mom is so hung up on getting the best deal that we can't buy anything without enormous amounts of research, unless, of course, it's from the thrift store. It's not like mom's being careful with money stopped my dad from blowing >$20k on random shit in the last 18 months or anything

/vaguely tech related rant
build it yourself, sounds like it'll be perfect. you can wait for deals/whenever things drop in price.
Yeah, I know, It's just that I have to go through my parents to order stuff because my mom would f'ing kill me if I ordered anything over $20-30, and she never gave me my ATM card for my bank account with the $$$ in it that my grandma gave me to get a computer. I was talking to my mom about getting a decent laptop for school and stuff, and she was like :"Try to find something <$500" The thing is, I kind of want something like this, not something like this.

It's really tough to talk to her about this stuff, because she gets all pissed when I try to explain the difference between the two, 'cause she doesn't understand it.

And no, I can't talk to my dad about it because:

A)he wouldn't understand either
B)he hates me about as much as my mom because he's been a total ass the last year and doesn't see why I don't want to go visit the f*cking cemetery all the time (told me: "Fuck You, I'm done with you, have a nice life...  when I told him I didn't like going to the cemetery all the time)
C)he doesn't have any $ because he's been attached to his job as the office manager at a shitty wrecking yard(drunk drivers have come through the office wall, Oil Refinery explosions/fires) nearby where he's worked since HS (never worked anywhere else) and hasn't gotten a raise in about a decade, literally, where he (Bachelor's in Business Management & Accouting) makes ~$38k with no benefits whatsoever and 1 week of vacation with 3-5 paid sick days, and that's not a conservative estimate or exaggeration of the conditions

Neither will play games and they will both do everything else pretty much as well as each other, whats the reasoning for the $900 one?

lol, my mate has 3x 24" monitors using eyefinity on his crossfired 5870 cards.

One of his monitors failed, and he told me that FPS games were now impossible to play.

I asked him why and he said "Where's the crosshair?"

Then I lol'd.

idk, I kind of think the one will last longer maybe, but seeing as I'll probably end up handing it down to my sister in a year or so, I guess it foesn't matter, I may go with the cheaper one

If it's just for school shit you could get away with something even cheaper TBH, that $450 one is more than enough for that sort of thing.

what determines how good a video card is?

my friend has the idea that its only really clock speed and amount of ram, just wondering if this is true. (prolly a stupid question but idk)

Not to mention architecture.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Fuck I hate Digg. There's comments about how the HP Slate will lose to the iPad because it doesn't have an AppStore.

I guess we'll have to contend with just the programs made for Windows and on the Internet then.

Okay what am I missing here...

Intel recently released the i5-750S

Same specs as the regular one, except for a slower bus speed (total 2.4 Ghz instead of the regular 2.66)

Yet the "s" is more expensive according to intel's list price...

For what reason does this processor exist?

I always seem to be out of HDD space and my file server is out of space for more HDDs too. Already had to ghetto something together for 4 of the drives. So I've been thinking.

Pick up 2 of these
Fill one up with 1.5TB drives, fill the other up with 1TB drives. I'm choosing those HDD sizes because I already have a couple of 1 and 1.5TB drives. The Lian-Li enclosure looks high quality enough. Has a 140mm fan for keeping everything cool.

Run RAID 5 on each of the enclosures. So I'd have a 6TB array (4x1.5TB + parity disk) and a 4TB array (4x1TB + parity disk). Then span one large partition over both arrays for a total of one 10TB partition. There won't be anything really important on there. Just a bunch of media and such. Still, I'd be protected against a drive crapping out.

Are there any problems with windows when it comes to disks that large? I'd probably be using Server 2008 R2 Standard.

Yes? No?

server R2 should see it.
we're a netware outfit, cutting over to M$. what i've seen so far, is 4 tb in array - no reason i can see that it won't scale . . .

As long as you dont have Windows XP/Vista and set the drives primary :p

I might have read it wrong... but if you stripe the drives for a total of 10TB you wouldn't be proctected since a stripe works kinda lika a chain.. if a join breaks, the entire chain goes....
