naw SERE, mine are pretty generic - a Marlin .22, Taurus 9mm, Ruger .357, and a Stanley rivet gun. wouldn't stand a chance . . .

.45s are fun, but they're not match pistol material.

Well, many of us prefer competitions more like this:

However: "While conventional (bullseye) pistol is a three-gun affair, the top shooters generally agree that using the .45 caliber pistol for both the Centerfire Match and the .45 Match is the best way to go."--The Encylopedia of Bullseye Pistol (John Dreyer)

IPSC - That guy should have been DQ'd since his feet were moving as he was firing - shouldn't even have had his finger on the trigger.
Anyway, IPSC is another comp where .45s are no longer competitive. Of my peer group I used to win routinely shooting minor with an "as issued" Hi Power against 0.45 Para Ordnance double stackers.

Bullseye - Yes in a match until recently restricted to the 0.45 1911 a 0.45 1911 was the best gun to have (although M9s are making inroads but they're even harder to 'smith). Whether you choose a different gun for the centrefire section is basically down to how much training time you have. I'd pick a centrefire which shoots like a .22 over a 0.45 any day.

Edit: Looking at the current rules you can move and shoot, when I was doing it it was considered too dangerous.

Ok, so you are more accurate than your peers.  I haven't seen many winners shooting with minor loads, lately.  (although I don't keep track of IPSC that well)

You do have a point, as many top shooters use double stack 1911s in .38Super.

I've got a question regarding the AR-15/M-16 etc.

How often/when is the charging handle used (in addition to clearing stoppages)? Just because I have seen the bolt release catch (?) being used more when reloading for speed.

The charging handle is used to load or unload a cartridge when the bolt is closed.

Basically you use the charging handle to initially load the rifle, then to unload the rifle when done. In between the initial load and final unload the magazine follower activates the bolt catch after the last round is fired, holding the bolt open. A new mag is inserted and the bolt catch is pushed to release the bolt and load a new cartridge.

Example:
Rifle is empty
Insert loaded magazine
Pull and release charging handle
Fire all rounds in the mag
The bolt locks open automatically
Remove empty mag
Insert a new mag
Release bolt catch
Fire half the rounds in the mag and decide you are done
Remove the mag
Pull charging handle to extract unfired round from the chamber, hold charging handle back to visually inspect the chamber making sure it is empty.
