I really don't think every planet being lined up with the "Center of the galaxy" is going to kill Earth. You could say the opposite, "Oh no! The planets aren't perfectly lined up with the galaxy anymore."
The problem with all these people "proving" planet Earth as we know it will end on December 21st 2012, is the rioting and looting that will ensue.
Now lets pretend it is going to happen. The government would obviously want to avoid this looting and rioting mostly just for their own sake, so they would pay tons of people to come up with bogus proof that it isn't going to happen.
