Ok, so when I check here, they're pretty similar except the 5770 has more shader operations and the 4890 has better memory bandwidth... which is more important, and why?

I see no reason to get an old card over a new one. There is more to it than just raw power.

If you need the raw power for a high res (implying a larger screen) you should be able to afford a more powerful current gen card.

Things like DX11, Eyefinity etc. There is a lot more to it than how much shader operations or bandwidth.

And to add some discussion, I have a 5870, an E8500 @4Ghz and 6GB DDR 2 ram and I see no performance increase between low everything and high everything @ 1920x1200. This game is entirely CPU bottlenecked.

That's what people keep saying, but my mate has the IDENTICAL cpu as me, and can run better on high than I can on low. My cpu has a Windows index of 7.3

He's got a 5770, I've got a 5450. My card is under recommended specs so therefore I need a new vid card. Comments about cpu isn't helping here, but thanks for the input anyways I guess.

In short, I want to run the game as best I can with a resolution of 1280x1024. I have no need to upgrade my 9 year old lcd monitor as it's enough for what I need it for.

Like I said, it makes no sense to get a 4890 at your res anyway, plus it's dearer. All I was saying is that out of the 2 the 4890 is the better card.

Get a 5750 or 5770, either or. If you have extra £10 or whatever currency you use spare then get the 5770 for the slight extra fps, if you're really struggling on budget get 5750 they're pretty much the same card anyway.

Also jaekus games can be CPU limited, especially games like BC2 but if you've got a bad GPU it doesn't matter how good your CPU is you're going to get bad fps.
CPU limited basically means if you've already got a good GPU, which you haven't (it doesn;t mean the game depends on the CPU for good fps, you can't get away with a good CPU and bad GPU)- look at games like COD4 that aren't CPU limited at all, you could play COD4 on a bottom of the range CPU and have exactly the same fps as someone with a top of the range CPU (if you had same graphics card) but if you added better graphics card fps just goes up and up. CPU limited is bit more complicated but all you need for the moment to play pretty much any game is a quad core with decent clock rate.

To sum up again, get the 5750 or 5770 at your resolution.

Ok thanks man, that's answered my question. I've noticed a 4890 on ebay for slightly cheaper, but it is 2nd hand and it's probably better to get a new 5770 with warranty for slightly more. Just need to have the money free cause I'll need a new PSU and case too...

I've also got another question, and I don't really want to start another thread for it.

To get a new vid card I'll need a new PSU. I've found one I want, it's this one here.

Question is, will the 600w model do, when in 12 months or less I will probably get a second 5770 and x-fire them, or should I get the 700 watt model instead?

Does it seriously require a 1Mbit/s net connection?

If so that's me fucked.

I was playing at 1920x1080 on a 5770 and it performs fine.

You'd probably be fine with the 600, but if you want to be safe, get the 700w, how much extra is it?

600W will be fine for even crossfired 5770s, depending on other stuff in the computer. The new ATi cards are pretty good on power.

It's only $20 extra for the 700w but I'm being stingy on the cash.

It'll end up being 6-8gb RAM, 1x DVD-RW, 1x HDD, 2x 5770, 1x CPU (AMD Phenom II 550), gigabyte MA785GT mobo, couple case fans.

What kind of performance have people been getting using the 5770? How well does it run on high vs. medium, mainly in terms of fps?

Im sure it will run playable at high.  Seem like the game runs well w/ ATI products.  I get a steady sixty with my 5850 on all high @ 1689x1050

I can't tell you what the FPS was but it seemed to run smoothly on high. You will get the occasional slowdown with big explosions etc. I've got it running on 2x5770's crossfired at present but it was OK with one.

Yeah the intention is to crossfire two 5770s, but the second one will be months away, so I'm hoping the single 5770 will be nice in the meantime.

I had no problems with 1 but had a second one in my HTPC but replaced that with a cheap 5450 and used the other one for crossfire not because i needed to but because the 5450 is dirt cheap and i fancied trying out crossfire.

I've already got a new 5450 as it seemed a good idea at the time, but now it's $75 I could've put towards a better card. Oh well, maybe I can get some money back on a resale. Once I get a new case + new PSU + new card + new DVD-RW drive I'll be sweet

So I'm fed up with lagging out in front of enemies and getting killed. I'm fed up with loading times then waiting ages until i can finally click the join button yada yada yada

Would this PC do any of the above?

i'd rather get an i7 920 and swap the 275 for a 280

Thats from Overclockers right? They do overclocked bundles, with the i7 930 you may as well have it overclocked up to 4Ghz as its a waste not to, with the motherboard and 6gig of ram altogether tuned by them, and go for ati 5870 instead.

Never had ati and all the Nvida cards I've bought worked fine.

How about this?

Thats a good bundle, i had a simialr one with just a slightly better motherboard, dropped a ATI 5870 in it and went from 3D mark 06 score of 10k to 25k.

I run BC2 maxed out on everything, dx11 and get between 80 - 100 FPS. Its worth the money.
