Rep. Joe Cao (R-Louisiana) was the only Republican who voted in favor of the bill.

I wish this bill wasn't passed just so I wouldn't be subjected to all the "hurr-durr socialism" statuses on Facebook.

So really it's actually just a great deal for the private insurers if it forces people to buy healthcare from them. But on the other hand it forces the insurers to not deny them coverage for health reasons, but all that would probably mean is the insurers will just set massive premiums for those that they are 'forced' to sign on. But then people won't accept that, so they'll just get taxed for not having health insurance, and then what?

This thread hasn't really provided any answers as to just exactly what this health care thing is, infact most Americans don't seem to have a clue what this bill is all about, what it actually does. Everyone just seems to be sprouting off the soundbites they got from their favourite media sources. Such as "oh noes/yay government healthcare" or "rip usa"

Do you guys actually know the details of this...? It doesn't look anything like the NHS or anything remotely like that
this post has truth
Has anyone mentioned that Obama has been touting this legislation as basically sticking it to the insurance companies?

Doesn't really sound that way, does it?

Again...should've been scrapped. It doesn't do what it was supposed to do, costs a horrendous amount of money, and will likely be proven unconstitutional to boot.

And it makes the Dems look like complete fags right now with the way they are behaving.

Passed, but may not be applicable in some states.

Since this thread has degraded so far already, this video by The Onion is pretty well representative of the entire debate surrounding the health-care issue. It is, however, speaking of bailouts--it's all the same shit when it comes to American monetary concerns.

I don't know...  I'd say the whole government is full of douchebags.  As Evan Bayh put it, the system is broken.

Granted, he was late in delivering the message, because our system has been broken since the 70s.

The Economist had a short nice article on the bill. Basically, even though the current bill is quite sad, it's a start and that's what is needed. It'll have to be modified, and maybe one day we'll have a nationalized health plan as well, but we needed to get the ball finally rolling. If it hadn't passed, who knows how many more decades we'd be arguing about it.
Any chance you can scan the article and post it here?

Socialised health care is great.  After a few years of it, you naysayers will start to agree.

Don't think so ... there is too much sociologic ethics and rethorics in the US for that to happen ... most people and not particularly in US is locked in a pattern of thinking it's hard to free oneself of making it close to impossible to think outside the box ...
