(CBS)   The battle of Wanat was the deadliest battle of the Afghan war. Taliban video shows the enemy surrounding a remote outpost, and shooting down on U.S. soldiers like fish in a barrel.

When it was over nine Americans lay dead.

CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports their company commander, Capt. Matthew Myer, was awarded the Silver Star for his bravery in fighting off a much larger force. His voice is heard calmly talking to Apache gunships overhead.

"Be advised, we're in a bad situation," Myer said. "Need you to come in hot immediately."

The enemy was so close that Myer told the incredulous pilots to lay down fire within 10 meters of his position.

"I know it's high risk, but we need to get these guys off of us," Myer said.
"Ten meters," the pilot replied. "You got to be kidding me."

Now Myer, along with two of his superior officers who were not at the battle, have received career-ending letters of reprimand for failing to prepare adequate defenses in the days leading up to the attack.

Forty-nine Americans and 24 Afghan soldiers had been ordered to set up the outpost deep in enemy territory.

It was July of 2008, and according to Sgt. David Dzwick, they were short of not just troops, but basic necessities.

"The second day we were extremely low on water," Dzwick said. "When you start running out of water it's very hard to continue working through the heat of the day.

Despite warnings from villagers that an attack was imminent, an unmanned surveillance drone which had been watching over the troops was diverted to a higher priority mission.

"Not having surveillance was the concern for me," Dzwick said. "Part of the planning is that we would have some."

The first Apache helicopters got there an hour and five minutes after the Taliban opened fire. By then, Captain Myer was the only officer still alive.

Myer can still appeal but right now he has been both decorated and reprimanded for the same battle.

Wow. How the fuck did this honestly happen. The Captain gets a Silver Star and then slapped on the ass with a Career ending reprimand. They were short on man power and supplies and held the line as best they could, yet Top Brass is crying for blood. Utterly Rediculous.

You take a Ranger company, stick it out in the middle of nowhere, tell it to build a defensive perimeter, refuse to adequately supply it with necessities and reconnaissance and then it's the grunts on the ground fault for having the timerity to take casualties. Yeah that sounds about right /sarcasm

Pretty shitty deal, but a pretty sketchy story, as well. Would like to see a bit more detail before developing any more of an opinion.

On the surface, it looks like he's getting hosed. But there's clearly more to it than the small amount that's being reported here.

To send one platoon, into the middle of enemy territory and think your not going to take casualties is ridiculous. atleast a company should have been in all round defence while the men we're preparing the defences, Bad preperation, but i don't believe the officer should have got the reprimant like they said without water they could'nt build the defences in time, if its anyones fault its top brass from not supplying them properly.

Based off of what's in the article, I'd say it's a case of the top brass trying to save their own careers by shooting down someone else's.  If they weren't properly supplied, especially with water, then it doesn't seem like there was much more that could have been done.  Dehydration is not a condition that you simply work through.

Ive known company commanders to be put their soldiers in harms way cus they got a case of the ass.  happened to our charlie company right be we redepolyed.  their CO volunteered their company for a right seat left seat ride a week before going home because his guys pissed him off and that last patrol, 3 soldiers were killed and two wounded including my bddy who was riding in the turret of the bradley as a gunner and hit a power wire with his neck.  he was in traction for 6 months before he came back and a month later gets his legs blown off by an ied

Sometimes CO's want to be the first ones to capture a strategic point despite logistical problems.
