get progressive.  I pay 800 for 6 months.  I have a clean driving record though
That is expensive.

Mine is AUS$70 per month so AUS$840 per annum. I am a rating 1 (least risk category).
Damn...  I pay 90 a month.  I didn't think it got cheaper than that...

Australians also drive less than Americans, on average, so that might be part of why your rates are so low.

You might also be better drivers in general...  who knows?...

I could increase my excess to $2100 and only pay $318 p.a
Or get third party insurance for $277.

It's partly about age.  I'll be fucked once my kids start to drive.

But I have pretty good coverage, with a $500 deductible.
I got my drivers license at 22 and bought my car the day after.  Im 27 now and I notice every 6 months the price goes down.  I used to have to pay around 1700 when I first got insurance.

You think you pay a lot for your cell? You should try Canada.
For insurance, try France. $6000 to insure me on a V6 audi.

IIRC I pay A$700/yr = U$640

One at fault accident causing the insurance company to more than double the insurance rate on a hair trigger seems justifiable?
Thats normal, the car you drive won't be helping.

Further more, many people rely heavily on their cars for work and school purposes.
Then they need to drive carefully, not drink and drive etc.

We have basic third party bodily injury insurance included in vehicle registration - not that everyone bothers with that. However if you cause an accident the state can sue you for the cost, so its wise to have insurance.

What it means is 16 yr olds can buy any car they like and run it for the cost of the petrol. The result is mayhem, compulsory insurance would keep kids out of Nissan Skylines and put them in Ford Fiestas until they grow up and gain some experience.

The only reason I want a car is so I can go places more easily with my girlfriend. DC has a pretty great public transportation system (although lately it's been somewhat unreliable, but when it's running 100% it's great) so I don't really need a car. I might end up using public transportation for a while until I'm older so I can get cheaper insurance rates.

Part of the problem is also that I was in an at-fault accident, so my rates are going to be sky-high for a while.

It should go away after about 3 years.  My sister got into a minor at-fault accident and rates when back to normal after 3 years as I recall.

10k a year for insurance is crazy.. Is that U.S., we're are so insurance rich and cash poor and this is why our economy is in the shiter.

You need with that and health insurance a job that pays 70+ just to survive.

Also at John, these insurance companies aren't in the black or even close to it.
