However: When Carlos told the suspects he had called 911, they got into a car and fled just ahead of sheriff’s deputies, who arrived within three minutes of when Patino first got Carlos’ call.
They were very lucky. The police were on their way, but the armed robbers were already there with weapons pointed at this kid's parents. If these criminals were the right type for spiteful or entertainment murder, this whole scenario could have gone south.
“If not for the brave and educated actions of the 7-year-old boy, this might have ended tragically,” said sheriff's Capt. Patrick Maxwell.
Yes, but it still could have ended tragically. They were at the mercy of the assholes who broke in. Glad they got out of this pickle, but I hope this family arms up. I guess having to confront criminals isn't all as "very, very unlikely" as some make it out to be.
