I think you also need to realize that the grades matter. It's simply not worth barely passing in a subject you think will pay off big and avoiding the subjects you would do better in because they are 'dead end'. Companies don't want the kids who scraped by. For the first few jobs you apply to with little experience they will likely ask for your marks (if they're a company of any worth), and even if not it will become evident that you're not the sharpest tool once in the position.

Beyond that, you're likely to do better in a subject you enjoy. With better grades come more opportunities for internships and jumping disciplines when you're thinking about your next move.

Kid, don't try to tell me how life works. Your life doesn't have to revolve around the pursuit of money but it damn well should involve doing something that provides for your family if you plan on having one. Encouraging someone to be an actor instead of choosing a rewarding career is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of.
goddamn you're so patronising sometimes. Being an actor could be a rewarding career. A rewarding career could be anything to different people. I know people who are city lawyers who earn hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. Yeah they can provide for their family. No, they never see their family cos they're always in the fuckin office 15 hours a day - when they're not sleeping there as well. No, they're not very happy either.

It's bollocks to say you have to earn a lot of money to be happy.

If you're lucky you can find a job you love that also pays brilliantly, but most people have to choose one or the other. OR you can get a job that you really like that provides enough money to live comfortably. Which is surely the best solution.
Spot on.  if your not having a good life outside of work what the fuck is the point!

Nonsense.  My best friend goes deep-sea fishing, golfing, etc. midweek.  One of the perks of his particular business.  I'm not there yet, and get pissed a bit when he invites me.

I'm IT, Corporate work, with IT consulting on the side.  Also an IT retainer business, but the economy isn't healthy enough to take on more clients.  Owning your own business is really where the money is.

My best friend, though, basically silver spoon though.  Already wealthy, smart business savvy with a ton of contacts, owns a few businesses, and family owns a Construction company.  So yeah, he is the exception to working hard for the money.  Oh, as for his businesses, none of the 9to5 stuff.  Import/Export, Buyer, international reseller, and the like.

If I really wanted to I could major in Golf Course and Turf Management. I'm not even joking.

What the fuck would I do with that? Does one really need a degree to know how to properly maintain a golf course or turf? Bah.

I agree with ruisleipa that money isn't everything, but it depends on the person. For me, I don't need a mansion, a fancy european car and all that. I just want to be able to afford rent/housing that's reasonable for myself/my family, have some nice gadgets, be able to afford healthy foods and go out to eat a few times a week at most, and be able to save enough money to help pay for my kids' college (Ideally I'd live in a good school district so I wouldn't need to pay for private school). Paid vacation would be nice too. So while I can't do that with a janitor's salary, I don't need to be a CEO to do that either.

Corporate Director level seems to offer a balance of nice pay and life balance.  Not too much business travel.  Access to the smart people who keep the company going, and just below the cut-throat executive world.  Aim for that.

Well, I figure I'd post this here because there are some aged souls on here who probably have experience with this sort of thing.

I've recently felt incredibly lost. I feel like I cannot find my purpose in life. Not in the suicidal sense, but as in I just can't find out what I want to do. I'm only 18, yet I'm almost done with one year of college, and eventually it'll be two years, so on so forth. I have zero idea what I want to major in. There are so many things that I want to do with my life that it's hard to pick just one. I want to do something that feels rewarding, something that I can enjoy. I want to wake up on Monday mornings and look forward to it, not start counting down to Friday evening.

I also want to live in a wonderful place... possibly even where I live right now. The problem is, all the places I would want to live in have such a high cost of living that it seems like I'd have to abandon all dreams of a job I enjoy for something that's stale, boring but brings in a lot of dough.

I keep wondering why I'm in college. I guess it's the logical step after high school, but I really have not been able to "discover myself" like everyone romanticized. I have discovered that I have a strong dislike of advanced math, which makes things like engineering very difficult for me to do (I like the idea of engineering and what engineers do, but I just don't think I can handle all that math). So now what? It seems everything else doesn't lead to any specific job. I really can't figure out what I want to do with my life just taking classes.

I guess I just want some sort of advice on what I should do. How to 'discover myself,' whatever the hell that means.
Do not make the mistake of spending your life in search of greener grass, or trying to "keep up with the Jones" you will never find it and never do it.

You are in college, obviously you have the means to be there. You must have your health since you are not complaining about it. Both are positives.

As for real advice in life. The only solid advice I can offer you for your career is this. Figure out what you would do for free, then get paid for it.

It really is that simple.

As for relationships my advice is this. Once you have your life on track, hold on to ONLY THOSE that compliment that life and does not attempt to change it. for all those that are not happy with your life as you have it set up, do not waste your time or money.

Lastly, seek real friends and family for advice and do not seek it on the internet by people you have no REAL attachment to.

True, not for a lifetime of searching, but striving for greener pastures motivates one to accomplish/achieve more.  As long as you maintain perspective, keep a solid foundation, and have backup plans/safety net, it's ok to take risks.

Also, don't completely shut out those who you can't benefit from at the moment.  There is karma and goodwill, and who knows, at some point, they may benefit you.   We've done favors for some people we've never got anything in return other than thanks.  It just feels good.

You just about described the family of one of my son's best friend.  Just replace the lambo with a Carrera.  Business owner and real estate brokers though.

There is a different in seeking to improve the quality of your life and replacing it with the myth of greener pastures. Such moves rarely work in your favor. This is the point I am making.
