Beginner Digital SLR

So, I am looking to pick up a digital SLR that is decent for around $600 price range. From my googling, it seems like the Canon EOS Rebel XSi with the 18-55mm lense is a good bet, also fits nicely in my price range at $570

Would you camera type people agree that this is the best for the price? Or is there something else I should get? The types of photography I am looking to do are landscape photos, pictures of architecture, family photos, etc. Just general photography. I was also hoping to do some macro stuff, but am led to believe you need an additional lens so that will probably have to wait. (I understand that interchangeable lenses are a big part of DSLR, and will pick up additional lenses in the future when I have the money).

I would throw in an xtra $100 and get the additional 55-200mm lens seeing as you are into landscapes ... a 70-300mm would be even better but that's prolly $150 or more xtra ...

Nikon or Canon are good safe choices and are priced pretty much the same ... search several websites also, you may encounter a special offer for a lower price ...

Canon Eos Rebel or Nikon D3000 seems to be very good cameras to start with

Mercenary, i have that camera (well my wife does now) and it is very nice. you've done your homework - interchangeable lenses make dSLR's versatile and specialized. i would recommend that camera, and if you'd like i would share some links to websites other members have shown me.

If you take a Nikon take the D60 or better.
The D40 is ok but not really good.

I've heard Professionals recommend a 50mm, or 35mm on cropped frames, for a (normal) first lens. One idea is to get as close as to the human eye as possible. It has much to do with developing your skill. Check out: Why You Should Ditch That Zoom for a Classic 50mm "Normal" Lens

"Shooting with a prime (non-zoom), normal (50mm-equivalent) lens will make you a better photographer."
