A guide to improvised aircraft and anti-aircraft strategies in Battlefield 2.

Improvised AA

Hello again. In BF2, against bots or other players, helicopters and jets are a really big threat. They can come out of nowhere, and cut you down. AA vehicles and missile emplacements are not always available, and you usually can’t take them with you because of terrain, or if they are a fixed emplacement. So, I have compiled a possibly handy guide that lists common and uncommon strategies used to remove the threat of aircraft.

Covering Fire: This is probably the most widely used improv AA strategy around. Infantry (you) often grab light transport vehicles to get really quickly from one place to another. However, these are a prime target for helicopters. Jets, regular and bomber will be reluctant to attack you if you are alone because their cannon is a poor air-to-ground weapon, and they don’t want to waste their valuable bombs or missiles. So, when a Roflcopter comes around and decides you could do with a smokey grey paint job, get on the HMG of your vehicle and return the favor. The HMG will take down a perfectly healthy attack or scout helicopter quite quickly, and they work quite well against transport Helicopters too (Remember, the choppers may have their hospital bill you, so beware). This strategy is best used with any light transport or heavier armored cars, excluding the DPV. The DPV’s HMG can only be turned 45 degrees in any direction. The other vehicles allow their HMG to be swiveled a full 360 degrees allowing you to fire at a chopper passing over head and behind you. The tanks also have a Browning 50 cal. or Kord 12.7mm HMG. (12.7mm is equal to 50 cal.) The RIB’s m249 is ok for AA, but it doesn’t really inflict anywhere near the damage of the HMG (Heavy machine gun AKA HuMoungus Gun). This strategy can also be accomplished using APC’s, but generally, the bigger the vehicle you use, the more likely an enemy will fire a TOW or Hellfire missile at you. Works best against: Scout Helicopters, Attack and Battle Copters, Transport Helicopters.

COD4 Imitation: For all you snipers, the Barrett is what you need for this strategy. Although the m24 and AWM are more accurate and do almost as heavy damage, the Barrett M95(Bolt action version) can actually pierce through the armored glass located on the helicopter cockpit. The Barrett needs to be unlocked, but if the enemy pilot slows down to let his gunner take a shot at you, pull a “captain price” and blast the guy. Other snipers also can inflict decent damage on a heli, but if it is at full health, or if it is armored like a transport heli, you will just waste ammo by shooting it. The semi-auto snipers and the m-24, although accurate or fast-firing, will not damage the heli enough to take it down quickly. Works best against: Scout Helicopters, Attack and Battle Copters, Transport Helicopters.

Supporting Fire: This strategy is specifically for the support class. Just like snipers, since the PKM and RPK-74 do more damage than any MG used by the USMC, PLA, or EU, use them to send your regards to choppers. The M249, being pretty inaccurate, will not score too many hits if the chopper is far away. And the type 99 has the same stats as the M249. Just less bullets. So use RPK-74’s and PKM’s for this kind of work. Works best against: Scout Helicopters, Attack and Battle Copters, Transport Helicopters.

Care Package: “No man, no problem” –Josef Stalin.
If you blow up an enemy air vehicle before it can take off, it can’t do any damage. WARNING: This following strategy, unfortunately, can be interpreted as camping, or spawn killing. It could get you banned. Go to an enemy vehicle depot, or someplace an enemy has parked his vehicle. Then, if you are Spec Ops or an Engineer, leave a parking ticket. And approximately 4 metric tonnes of plastique explosive. Watch, laugh, post on youtube, and forward a copy to Michael Bay. For engineers, throwing a mine on a vehicle will destroy the vehicle the minute it moves. Works best against: Scout Helicopters, Attack Helicopters, Battle Copters (Special Forces expansion), Transport Helicopters, Fighter jets, bomber jets, and attack aircraft (Armored Fury Expansion).

Baiting: If an enemy pilot is attacking you, but doen't seem to be very good, try to get him to accidentily suicide. Run into areas infested with trees or other cover, and hopefully he will follow you. However, this strategy works best against the Mi-28 Havoc. Since it is an attack helicopter, the pilot will fly low and slow to try to kill you. All pilots use similar flying tactics for each attack helicopter. But, the thing about the Havoc is that it has very poor handling, and responds with the same quickness as a transport copter, or Dialup internet. If they do one thing stupid, they will likely lose control and crash.

Improvised Aircraft Strategies

The following are very unconventional ways to use aircraft, but, unconventional does not mean useless.

WTFortress/Roflcopter inbound: This strategy has been used before, but it works, and is a very effective infantry and light armour busting strategy, though it requires a transport, scout, or attack heli. This works best with the sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk. Fly your overpriced helicopter to any hill or rooftop that is nearby a control point or outpost. Than position you transport or scout Heli so that the HMG (PLA Z-10 and  MEC Mi17) or minigun (USMC Black Hawk) mounted on the side of your heli can cover the nearby area. With 2 or 3 helicopters, this gets freaking hilarious and effective. Then, decimate anything and everything nearby. If armour or AA rolls in, GTFO ASAP. The scout heli’s have the same stats as their armies transport heli, and the same armament, except they have less armour than transport heli’s. They have more speed for quick escapes, though.. The attack heli’s are good for this strategy because of their powerful gatling guns and cannon’s. However, the TOW, Hellfire, and other TV guided missiles will not work when you are on the ground. They will just hit the ground. Also, your rockets may be slightly inaccurate. But, since heli’s can fly, you can shift your fortress to adapt to any situation. Although it may seem stupid to leave a helicopter on the ground, this strategy prevents many forms of AA from taking you down. It works with all helicopters. Damn nature. Trees can go to hell. They provide convenient sniper and AT cover. Though, if these threats attack your Roflformation, artillery will blow up the stupid environment. You should always respect the environment. Just not in video games.

Hanging Around: This only works with the American F-35 Joint Strike Fighter used on carrier operations, although it would work with the EU Harrier if it hadn’t been deleted D:. Take your shiny new and expensive fighter and attack an enemy group. It actually doesn’t matter what the enemies are. Using the hover feature (Hold S), you can land very close to enemy groups. You can also shadow them by flying like a helicopter. Then, you can zoom right up to the unsuspecting soldiers, and bomb them. Sometimes, being fashionably late is a good idea. Wait until the enemy group walks or drives away from anything that could be used to shoot you down. Your AA missiles will destroyed any copters, and one or two AA’s can be bombed. The biggest threat will be stinger or IGLA missiles, because infantry can be tricky to hit with the cannon. And if all else fails, land on the damn troops.

Carpet bomb with kamikaze finish: Using a bomber, fly the F-15 or Sukhoi su-30/34 towards the enemy’s main base. However, be the Special Forces class and attach C4 to your bomber. After the carpet bomb, flight right towards a cluster of enemy assets that are close together, usually artillery fits this category. Then aim the plane at the assets, jump out, and blow the thing to smithereens. The enemies will head to their base to see who blew up their assets, but you won’t be there. The good news is you’ll be a mile away, safely landing in your parachute and hijacking a nice getaway vehicle. The bad news is that your parachute could have conveniently gotten stuck in a tree, allowing the newly pissed off enemies to find you.
