If we had a tectonic weapon wouldn't we use it on our sworn enemies?
Dumb dumb DUMB.

I'm interested as to why China isn't affected, there doesn't seem to be much in the way between the epicentre and parts of China

yeah "Experts said the quake was one of the strongest ever measured in the world.Spark wrote:
I would be astonished if the death toll stays so low. An 8.8 is an enormous earthquake.

Remember that tsunami waves have massive wavelengths, they may not be really high but there's alot of it in a quick amount of time. Even a few foot high wave would cause huge damage if it was a few miles long. It's a shitload volume of water rushing in. When it hits shallower waters it collects up on itself so the height increases even more.
Haven't heard much news about the tsunami this quake has caused so I'm guessing it hasn't done much and that everyone was prepared for it anyway
Although I guess waking up to the news tomorrow might paint a different picture, still, doubt this is going to register anywhere near the scale of 2004 or Haiti

I tell you what... I wouldn't be averse to only hiring Chilean architects and builders. They really know their shit when it comes to making good tough buildings.

Hire Japanese. I don't trust Taiwanese architects after that hotel tipped over during a typhoon...Spark wrote:

Japs can build shit that can go through earthquakes and huge typhoons
What a time to be away from jolly old NZ eh? Then again I am closer to Chile now. Would suck if I flew back home and there was nothing there though... I'd probably move to Canada...
Tsunami warning for NZ has been downgraded now, still on alert but it'd be pretty unlikely for anything significant to hit NZ.
I'm in Puerto Iguazu in Argentina at the moment anyway, pretty far away from it all. My folks reckon I should go to Chile and help in the clean-up given my army training and all. Big 'fuck you' to that. My rule here is 'don't help anyone or anything'.

Yeah, Chilenos know how to make some mean structures. This was a hell of a lot stronger than the Haiti earthquake but there will be far fewer casualties in total and far less property destruction. Because they know (and can afford) to make earthquake-resistant buildings. Hell, the biggest earthquake ever recorded hit Chile and "only" killed 3,000 people.
Have a lot of family down there, thankfully everyone's okay.
edit: Also I believe Chile's government has long saved money in a sort of rainy day fund for these sorts of things.

Well they would have to suck in a special kind of way to be an earthquake-prone country such as Chile and to not be the dogs bollocks when it comes to knowing how to build earthquake proof buildings and shit.
Although I still think if it was a shallow quake that was right next to the capital city like it was in Haiti then maybe people wouldn't be talking about how awesome Chile is regarding earthquakes, at the end of the day we can only do so much when it comes to dealing with nature

But it was also offshore and quite deep from what I heard, and not near big areas. Yeah it's huge, but there's more to a quake than the richter number. Otherwise you don't get 8.8's that cause such low casualties just out of being "awesome", it doesn't happen. It's just luck of the draw when it comes to other factors.
it was a message to chavez is what it was
