Even in 2008 when the participation rate was far higher then it is today and the unemployment rate was far lower, LESS then half your population was working. I wouldn't be surprised if 60% of your population doesn't have a job today.
Yeah.  Six in my household, but only two working.  67% of my household doesn't work.  Oh dear.  The horror.  Perspective folks.  You can't use overall population to determine the workable population.  Let's bring back child sweat shops.

The only questions on the census that I wasn't too happy with were the "When do you normally leave for work every day?" and "When do you come home from work everyday?" questions.  The government has no real need to know when I'm at work and felt a bit like "When is the best time to rob you?".

And to chime in on the taxes debate, I have one of those shitty starter jobs where I make $34k/year...and I did pay federal and state taxes.  If I didn't have student loans to pay back, I would have a pretty good amount of surplus money every month as well.  Do I want to make more?  Hell yes.  Am I planning on moving elsewhere and finding a new job?  I'm in the process now.
