I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
Since the vast amount of people who are overweight are overweight because it is their own fault, why are fat people considered a protected group?

You can't say something nasty bout a person based on their skin color, that is fair because a person can never change their race or color, but a overweight person has the ability to lose weight if they change their diet habits and exercise.
Usually it comes down to self control and will power, both of those are character traits.

Now before anyone says "Why do you care it doesn't affect you!", it does.

When the government begin to regulate how much sugar is in food or levy taxes on foods that are fattening, that I enjoy, it does affect my happiness. It also affects my wallet when my healthcare cost go up because of people having a lack of self control when it comes to eating. It also affects businesses who cannot "discriminate' against an overweight person whose presence may be 'bad for business' due to to their often times nasty habits or all around sub par physical attractiveness.

So why are fat people considered a group which people cannot be 'mean' to even though they are a negative factor in society? Why is it wrong for a person to wear a "Proud to be Fit" shirt but acceptable for a "Pride to be Obese" shirt?

It's no okay to be fat, why is all of society pretending like it is?

'Obesity 'often set before age of two'
The "tipping point" that sets children on the way to a lifetime of obesity often occurs before the age of two, say US researchers.
A study of more than 100 obese children and teenagers found more than half were overweight by 24 months and 90% were overweight by the age of five.

A quarter were overweight before they were five months old, the researchers reported in Clinical Pediatrics.

In the UK, around 27% of children are now overweight.
The children in the study - who had an average age of 12 - were all overweight or obese by the age of 10.

Although the reason for rapid weight gain in early life is not well understood, contributing factors are likely to be poor diet, early introduction of solid food, and not getting enough exercise, the researchers said.

They added that food preferences may be set by the age of two, so changing a child's eating behaviour at a later stage may be difficult.

Study leader Dr John Harrington, an assistant professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School, said the results should be a "wake-up call for doctors".
He went on: "Too often, doctors wait until medical complications arise before they begin treatment.

"Getting parents and children to change habits that have already taken hold is a monumental challenge fraught with road-blocks and disappointments.
Overeating and not exercising add to the problem obviously.

Well if the parents are obese, how much do you think the child will eat as well? It's the food culture that will exist amongst the family.

7 months ago i was a fatass who never did any physical activity ever, then i started lifting weights and running everyday (which isn't that hard its pretty fun, infact exercising is like my favorite thing to do now) and i went from a 42 sized waist to a 34. I also started eating fruit and veggies and stopped drinking 2 sodas a day and half a gallon of ice cream at 2 in the morning while i played computer games. I look at pictures of myself back then and think wow what a fucking fat piece of shit. Its not that hard, get off your ass, stop eating bigmacs and funnel cakes all day and use your money to get a gym membership instead of next months world of warcraft subscription.

Unless it's caused by some sort of condition, medication etc then I see being overweight the same way I see getting emphysema from smoking. Yeah it sucks but you chose to smoke. Just like people choose to eat too much and not exercise enough.

yet fat is attractive in some cultures

http://college.hmco.com/history/readers … ofwome.htm

The preference among immigrant and upwardly mobile groups for
plumpness in women as an indication of prosperity combined with the
campaign of doctors against extreme thinness and tight-lacing corsets
to make weight fashionable among women by the mid-nineteenth century.
For a time, fat was considered beautiful.

=================================================

http://www.mwillett.org/mind/bigwomen.htm

Palaeolithic men valued larger women. Female fat was a sign of well
being, plenty and the ability to survive hard times. In the days when
hunting provided a large proportion of our food having a fat wife was
the equivalent of driving a Ferrari.

=================================================

http://www.beststart.org/resources/bdy_ … age4a.html

Preferences for body shape have varied over time and between cultures.
Historically, most societies have associated fatness in women with
desirable social status as it is an overt sign of wealth where food is
not abundant (Rudofsky, 1972). In many countries, obesity is viewed
with admiration as a sign of fertility, strength and prosperity, all
of which are related to human survival (MacKenzie, unpublished
manuscript). In many non-Western countries, large women are considered
beautiful and sexually attractive. It is common in African cultures
for fat to be interpreted as a symbol of sexual maturity, fertility,
prosperity, strength and wisdom (Sheinin, 1990).

=================================================

http://www.women24.com/Women24/Life/Bod … 70,00.html

But in some African cultures being plump is considered healthy. And
health in turn equals beauty. Some Asians will assume you're rich if
you are overweight, which indicates success - another attractive
attribute.

=================================================

http://www.healthyplace.com/Communities … _image.htm
It is interesting that in some cultures fat is considered beautiful
and a sign of wealth, so women are fattened up before marriage!

=================================================

http://www.abc.net.au/dimensions/dimens … 917443.htm

DR CAROLINE WEST: It's only fairly recently in history that thin
bodies have been the shape society aspires to. Fat used to be
fashionable, and in many other cultures, fat is still the desired
shape.

DR GARRY EGGER: There's one beautiful story about an African king who
used to fatten up his wives before he married them to the extent that
they couldn't...they couldn't walk. They were so fat that they had to
sit still, and that was regarded as a sign of beauty.

=================================================

http://www.candydarling.com/lte/Library/definbeauty.htm
In Victorian times in the West, larger women were the epitome of beauty.

more i found

I remember having read
something about force-feeding in a book about Livingstone's expedition
in Africa but although i haven't found anything about that on the web,
i did find a couple of references in modern Africa :

-Mauritania's 'wife-fattening' farm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3429903.stm
> this article reveals that fatness was a symbol of beauty in
traditional Mauritania : "Once they are fat and beautiful they can
serve their men well, once they are fat they can be married."

-This seems to be quite true all over Africa, as shows the 2003 beauty
pageant election in Burkina Faso which resulted in a 117kg winner.
(Burkina Faso's Miss 'Large Lady' : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/3304161.stm)

-According to an article from Jet, a Miss Fat South Africa beauty
contest "is held to reinforce African values and traditions of beauty
despite the growing influence of Western culture, which touts
super-slim shapes as the beauty standard."
(http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/ … i_87210857)

-a medical site (http://www.healthandage.com/Home/gm=20!gid2=2544)
even talks about a survey of traditional cultures in Asia and Africa
that "reveals many examples of teenage girls being encouraged to eat
well and to develop a full figure, so as to become more beautiful
according to local tastes".

In fact, in Africa and India, weight is a sign of health and richness,
and as such has integrated itself as an indicator of "beauty".

In Pacific Islander cultures,large physical size isconsidered a mark
of beauty and social status. That explains why Native Hawaiians and
Samoans are among the most obese people in the world and don't even
consider it to be a health problem !

Consider also the Venus beauties of prehistoric times, they are quite
fat : http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/s/images/s … orf.lg.jpg
(Venus of willendorf).

You shall find a couple of interesting facts about fat bottoms in
prehistoric times and 19th century Africa at :

It feels good to be fit! like i'm more able to push myself to more then what I feel like when I was a chubster
