Doesn't help when you have these idiots circumvent the law. Well most colonies fail when they become independence is because they have one to really rule the country. Most revolutionaries are from lower class, without having any knowledge of how to really run the country. They also get the bright idea to kill most intelligent people because they were working with "the man." The US didn't fall towards that because the revolutionaries actually know how to run shit. Between the colonization of Haiti and our more recent manipulations of their government, it's pretty asinine to suggest we and much of Europe aren't at least partially responsible for their pathetic state.
