John, I work for one of the major global engineering firms in the world.  It's in my best interest for my company to be profitable (ESPP   ).  But there are just things that the government has to lead, namely, projects that require significant amount of money and time to accomplish, that won't show any significant profit for decades or more.  Innovations that will eventually make it to the private sector and make profit.  No single company has the resources, or should be given the resources, for such massive projects.  One private company having such control over such "humanity changing" projects would actually stifle innovation.
Oh, so your problem is with patents. What other motivation does a for profit company have in innovating if it can't profit off from it? Are you really one of those naive scientist types that does his work 'for the good of humanity'? Gotta be more like Edison or you're just somebodies bitch.

Patents don't last forever and they are the driving force behind most innovation.

Quite the opposite actually. Too many people with their hand in the cookie jar begets corruption. I'd say that a man who has it all like Rockefeller is entirely unbuyable and incorruptible.

Edison fucked over many business partners and he made millions by patenting shit lol.

Edit: One man that did invent something and gave it for free was Tim Berners-Lee. He gave us teh internatz.

No problem with Patents.  I'm whole heartedly for the sound ones.  Pharmaceautical patents, all for them considering the outlay for all the research.  For something like the Blackberry's "push", well...

BTW, do you use the Internet?  One of those "good for humanity" projects...

So, no cronyism during Rockefeller's reign?

Of course there was, but who was at fault? It's not like the American public didn't have the power to vote out corrupt politicians then, just like it maintains the power now. Does it ever happen? Hardly ever. People like to bitch about stuff they don't really understand but when it comes time to vote they'll keep sending the same old asshole back into office because they somehow feel comfortable doing so. Blame the idiot voters.

I do.  And I also vote along company lines.  I'm just waiting for my company to start promoting initiatives and ballot measures.  We are all self serving.  But that's not to say we don't help our fellow man from time to time.

As above (thx John) - you don't send a rescue party for robots.
We need to send humans to test living arrangements.
And now, The Intergalactic Odd Couple!

There is one advantage to concentrating power in the hands of one.  Assassinating one man is much easier than killing many.

I've got a 9mm S&W Sigma.  It's cheap, but it gets the job done.

I'm not a gun collector, but I definitely support gun rights.
