Do you think in times of urgency that the government should ignore the constitution or do you think it must be upheld completely without compromise?"The Constitution is not a suicide pact" is a rhetorical phrase in American political and legal discourse. The phrase expresses the belief that constitutional restrictions on governmental power must give way to urgent practical needs.
Didn't Lincoln violate the Constitution during the Civil War to arrest some Confederates?
Yeah the next line from the wiki article goesHurricane2k9 wrote:

It is most often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, as a response to charges that he was violating the United States Constitution by suspending habeas corpus during the American Civil War.
If anyone says yes, would you answer similarly to say, circumventing the the Bill of Rights?
Invasion or Rebellion.
When you start ignoring the Constitution, you risk the rest of it.
Risking the foundation of our government is not to be taken lightly.
(Add to that the military's oath to "support and defend the Constitution"...things could get REALLY messy.)
So no, I don't support ignoring the Constitution.

Ignoring parts of it when it becomes inconvenient is contrary to the whole. It exists solely because it becomes a check on governmental power during any trying time period in which it, historically, would expand. The constitution is a check against the expansion of government. These strict limits exist so we not devolve into the normal state of any government, tyranny.

Any laws, bills or constitutions will at some point become old and needs to be changed and/or more up to date ... given the period of time most laws was written they reflect that very period and are often enough not needed anymore or are obsolete in the period we live in now ...

The point of having the Constitution in the first place is to prevent dickheads from arresting people for no reason. Funny how Lincoln was seen as the god of freedom when he suspended various liberties protected by the constitution.
Read the Bill of Rights and tell me which ones you think are obsolete.Varegg wrote:

A well regulated Militia isn't something required for a free state any longer.
And when was the last time you saw a Militia in the US?
Euro's live in a nice urban environment where cops are effective. 95% of the US is still undeveloped land.Cybargs wrote:

Organized militia = Military
Unorganized Militia = Regular guy with a gun
To Aussie: not exactly vigilantism, but when you think about how much of the US doesn't have cops by land area (farmers etc) and would need weapons to defend their families if some shithead wants to start shit ya know.
Depends on how you define the word. Here, property rights are enshrined and trespassers can be shot. You are well within your rights to shoot someone if they enter your home without your permission. You may view that as barbaric, I view it as valuing the homeowners life more than the intruders, which is rational.AussieReaper wrote:

3: So you want random troops in your house because they're soldiers?
4: Gov says "We want your house now fuck off" is ok?
6 and 7: You really don't want a jury system? Sure some jurors are idiots, but it's the best check and balance system. So you don't believe people have a right to a lawyer?
10: It allows states to have certain laws that will work for them that the federal gov doesn't have in place (Such as a social health care system in Massachusetts).
You know the terms rewrite and update yes?
