Gun owners - Would you still have one if it was illegal?

I want to get a gun for self defense purposes but according to the stupid laws of my country i can't. I applied for a license and was denied for the second time

Should i get one illegally and hope i don't get caught 'cause if i do i can look at a 3 year sentence?
Or just be robbed again and get a better insurance for my business 'cause i really can't count on law enforcement to do something?

Last time they just came through the front door as i was closing and forced me to open the register which was loaded, people tell me that was good because if it had no money they'd probably would harm me physically. I know. I have a friend who owns a coffee shop who is facing trial right now 'cause he shot a burglar and the thing is his gun was legal but the courts are seeing as a case of excessive self-defense.
