I play oblivion (fucking awesome game )
but you get the choice of AA or HDR to be enabled (for ATI cards a patch has been released for them both to be enabled) but i have Nvidia and just wondering which looks better AA or HDR?

I'm playing Oblivion with a radeon connect3d x800 pro GTO, 3G of ram, 2.2 AMD 64 san diego, 19inch lcd 8ms DVI connection, and the only difference between the graphics settings in-game is object distance.  Shadows suck, regardless of their settings.  Game looks good, but cranking everything doesn't make that much difference.
Meanwhile, to answer your question, HDR is nice (even though I'm not using it) and I know nothing of AA.

Anti-Aliasing is the more common of the two, for nVidia I think I stick with Anti-Aliasing over the newer HDR unless you have a 7 Series Card. Also this should be in the tech section lol.

Ya a 7 Series should be better with HDR. Looks neat the technology for HDR. Actually A GeForce FX5200 supports HDR lol, but the technology should be used with a good card and also test both AA and HDR out and pick your personal comfort over the two and stick with it. Mostly it is just personal preference.

HDR= High Dynamic Range. It's main purpose is to extend the range or limit of dynamic exposure so more options of the perfect lighting conditions can be made in a scene in-game using more detailed shadows and lighting to match real-life scenes. The HDR mentioned in Oblivion adds the term rendering, which creates the range and alterations by using a newer method of lighting models to create more detailed and realistic scenes over more conventional lighting models used in older games and gfx cards. The gfx cards has to be very powerful cards in order to take the load of HDR and its models, which the nVidia 7800GTX can easily do. The rendering could also help increase the detail and accuracy of in-game geometry and shapes by covering up the blemishes (jagged pixels, slight imperfections) with the proper use of light, shadows and color.

Anti-Aliasing = AA. More on the geometric models, which IMO could make more of a difference in the details than lighting. It is how much covering is used to cover jaggy pixels on geometric models to make them look more linear, curved and smoothed. It is not really to do with lighting but these rendering could make models of characters look super smooth and not 16-bit square crap. For the best AA, use a good gfx card which you do have.

AA is used in BF2 and has caused issues on nVidia cards, especially the 6 series. I heard gfx issue with AA on from users on this forum. Consider that as well, but I would use AA in Oblivion because that game has less of a gfx problem than BF2 has so you should be fine. Also, HL2 can utilize both AA and HDR in the game.

Hey anytime! Like I said before, it is merely what your eyes sees comfortable. I prefer both to be on but since you really don't have that option, you can pick whatt suits you. I would got for High AA though. Just my insight.

i would say AA since HDR is best if ur making a game comic though. BTW hdr is very very power hungry...

hdr rules HANDS down!!!

AA smoothes out edged primarily.  HDR is the new protocol in making graphical effects look and react more realistically, and in terms of such a dramatically beautiful game as obliv, use HDR every time.  It renders the effects of sunlight, flares, flames etc.  If u want to max the effect of oblivion, use HDR, no question.  AA makes things look smother, but HDR adds realism and believability to the graphics.

you could opt for a smoother edge to your unsheathed weapon, or u could gawk at the beautiful effects of sunlight shining thru the branches of trees.. your choice, but to me, it aint a choice at all.

I like AA because I care about geometric details. lighting sometimes screws up my head when playing...
