It's not socialism because the military is an employer. That's like calling my dad's office socialist for providing health care.
Who do you think funds the military?

if the military was an example of socialism then I wouldnt have had to spend half my paycheck on gear and supplies whenever I went to the field

the bare necessities were issued.  if you wanted to make your job easier youd have to buy stuff.  considering I was getting paid about $445 every two weeks for the first year I served (as an e-3 no less) it wasnt hard to spend a couple hundred dollars on stuff Ill need for a 45 day field excercise

Wooooaaaa... while I agree that there's too often a rose-tinted view of soldiers, police, and armed forces I don't know if I'd put it in as strong terms as you have. There's little to be gained in tarring such a huge diverse collection of people with one brush, some people will genuinely deserve and benefit from this program, and yes, many will exploit it, that's the way of the world. Saying soldiers and their wives are all just out for the money and the benefits is the same as somebody accusing all soldiers of being heartless baby-killers. At the end of the day it is still more money being thrown into the bottomless pit that is Middle Eastern conflict... should've stayed at home lads.

Might wanna get a flame-proof suit btw!
Why? eleven bravo is a vet too and he agreed with me. I'm not talking out of my ass, this is what I experienced first hand while I was in the service.

Also wouldn't be paying your own wages in income taxes either Always thought it was bullshit having to pay fed taxes. I switched to Texas residency as quickly as I could to get out of state taxes

Who do you think funds the military?
Taxpayers. But it's still employment, and things like healthcare and housing allowance are employment benefits.

Any industry funded, regulated or administered by the Government is Socialist by definition... that includes miitary, law enforcement, libraries, fire brigade, civil service, public schools, and the heath board (in Europe at least... and in the US shortly ). Socialism is not just the Government handing out money willy-nilly to freeloaders.

thats way too broad of a definition I think.  You could say that about every military in history.

It kind of is....  it's part of why I don't understand the stigma against it....

Even private industries work similarly to socialism.

Take insurance for example.  You pay into a fee structure that helps to subsidize expenses incurred by other people.  The government might not be running it (yet), but it's still socialistic in its principles -- but that's why it works.

Thats why I hated and still hate to this very day, Camp Pendleton.

2 weeks before we were set to come home from Iraqistan, 10/12 married Marines in my platoon got divorce papers.
