I just finished building the following:

AMD 4800+ X2
7900 GT
2 Gig OCZ Platnium RAM 2-3-2-5

I have set the game to run at high for almost everything (med on one thing maybe) with 2AA.

It is smooth - still dealing with some dual core freeze ups / drop outs....getting through that though.

I was in a Humvee in the .50 cal last night screaming around corners and noticed a little choppy/lag. Not too bad, but definately there. I have not tried flying yet with the new rig.

I was a little disapointed....thought I had a pretty good rig set up and would never see that again....

Is that normal....or might I have a software or setting issue? I know...it is impossible to speculate from that....

The overall specs of your computer is fine... It is very impressive by my opinion. The dual core situation can be solved (as you have). Maybe it is your internet connection. Not all the best computers couldn't strike lag when they are connected to bad connection. Check the modem and the connection as well as the ping you get on servers when you play. Also, if you ahve a virus scanner on or other programs that takes internet bandwidth and RAM, you should turn these off as well before playing, but since you have a dual core, it shouldn't be a problem. I think it is more of your internet connection that software/hardware, because you do have a nice sweet rig that would grind through BF2 very well.

thanks - I will check my connection - I guess the best way to it just look at my ping during the game?

I also was considering getting another modem...I have the rented one from the Cable/ISP - was not sure if that would even make a difference?

Ya, averagely your ping should be under 100ms but if you are getting over it you will be vulnerable to lag. If you are getting huge pings constantly, maybe it is your ISP issues with your provider and the modem. Also check the bandwidth your ISP gives you to make sure you are getting around the average kbs your ISP stated to give you and ya, a different modem also could cure the problem. If problems persists with the new modem, than contact your ISP for bandwidth and connection issues.

Usually Cable modems and connection tends to suck when playing BF2 than DSL. I have a Cable Modem too and I get lagged so much, you don't really want to know. Just contact the ISP if you get persisting problems.

My friend had an older modem that would cause him grief with lag and dropped connections. Once he got a new one his problems went away.

I had lag issues once and it was because of my router. Not sure if you are using one, but I saw horrible lag even with good pings (30-40) with this router. It was dropping packets everywhere. I went back to my good ol' $25 Microsoft router and the lag was no more.

You might try and use ping plotter to see if you are dropping a lot of packets between your location and a server you want to play on.

Thanks, I will consider that program, not only do I have crappy Cable but also have a crappy Router...
