There is already a thread about Haiti, but it's going along a different path. I'd like to bring up a different topic: The amount of relief being donated to Haiti.

I've been watching Larry King Live on CNN Intl and to be honest, I'm sickened at the stuff they've been parading on there. Multi-billion dollar companies donating simply $1 million? OK, that's fine - you're a company, you have no real moral obligation (though it would be a good PR tool and a great tax write-off, but whatever). But then I hear that the New York Yankees, a business certainly, but more a group of men who play baseball for a living has donated $500k. Now I have to ask: How could they ONLY donate $500k? Each one of those players is clearing AT LEAST that annually, not to mention the team owners and the team manager. Then the amount of high dollar players that the Yankees have on contract - again, these guys are clearing annual salaries upwards of $1 million (certainly more, but I'm keeping the numbers conservative). And as an entire team, they can only chip in together $500k?

Then Ted Turner's UN Foundation has donated $1 million. Come on. He's fucking Ted Turner, one of the richest men in the entire country. And he's only chipping in $1 million via his charity? Not even him personally, but his charity foundation. That sonofabitch could easily drop in a lot more.

So this leads me to my question: What the hell is wrong with the wealthy in the USA?

I wonder how many of those who are making either pittances or not donating at all are simply saying "leave aid to the government"... honestly, I wouldn't know. Mind you, ever dollar helps and it's pretty early to be making huge donations

ONLY a million dollars...???
they don't have to donate a fucking penny...
but they DO and the US is first to help out Haiti as usual...

Any totals of donations from other countries?

I'm not arguing a legal issue here, but rather a moral.

Because Haiti is right next to you. If something happens in Indonesia, Australia will be the first to pledge, not the US, or if something happens in Ukraine, Russia or the EU would probably be the first to pledge. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just natural to expect that the first to offer help are the geographically closest - they 'know' the region best and are the best positioned to give aid.

However, I thought this was about private citizens, not the US [government]. You're right, they're under no obligation to help - but given the circumstances, it would be pretty dickheaded not to if you can.

In fact I would say it's waaaaaay too early to be making any judgements on donation sizes yet, when we don't really know that much about what has happened except that an earthquake just flattened a city.

and they have stepped up and donated 500,000 to 1 million dolllars...
the US is extremely generous and i'll bet in the next week or so the donations will be even more substantial.

and i'm sure the Govt will send a huge amount of money and support... Obama said he would.

Meh, they're not obligated to donate. I guess if I earned that kind of cash, and cared enough to donate I'd donate more than that, but it's up to them.

I have a better question:

Why is everyone pretending they give a shit about Haiti? If people/countries really cared they would have helped that country build better buildings in the first place instead of waiting to send help after they collapse on everyone.

Funny I didn't see any Austrians on there...

Check out the history of Haiti. You've deployed troops there to restore an overthrown government which then becomes just as corrupt as the leaders you removed. It was Bush Jnr who sent in the marines.

The US has already sunken billions of dollars in aid to the country in the past, but the government has been to corrupt to do anything of use with it. Most of the nations population is in poverty.

Building quake resistant housing wasn't big on anybodies priorities. Not that it would do too much good against a magnitude 7 quake, anyway...

No...

The UN have operated in the country for years also.

Try following my advice and look into the history of the country. Drawing wild conclusions as the above just makes you look ignorant.

The most important thing for Haiti is education and resources. Give them knowledge, safe water and sanitation systems and I'd say that's half the battle already.

Companies don't have any moral obligations (if there is such a thing anyway) so I don't see the problem.

they drop a mill to Haiti, they drop a mill to some kids charity, they drop a mill to a hospital, they drop a mill to wounded warriors, they drop a mill to relief organzation, they drop a mill to orphange, they drop a mill to breast cancer, they drop a mill for medical research

they may only drop a mill to Haiti but they also do a lot of other charity .......... they only budget so much money if they take dropped 2 mill then another charity that was depending on that mill is left 1 mill in the hole

to keep it real, haiti put itself in its shitty infrastructure position.  They once had control of the entire island.  The DR regained independence in the 1860's (I think) and has been more prosperous since.

Companies do it for good PR and press, but what would China actually gain for giving lets say what you may consider a fair amount, 100 million? Politicians aren't moral people, you just can't be. They do what they can for gains, both nationally and personally. It's not like China needs to uphold it's image of being a fair, human/animal rights abiding, democratic haven...

Damn that's alot of aid:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8459444.stm

Then again, it is the USA's backyard. This country can count itself on being lucky that it's in that part of the world, considering the state that it's in.

I know you get alot of earthquakes hitting third world countries, but they never do really hit the poorest of countries. In that sense Africa is lucky is avoids most of these type of natural disasters, but this is basically showing what would happen if it did.

They're talking about death tolls of upto half a million. This thing is gonna eclipse the freakin Asian tsunami. I had always thought that'd probably be the worst natural disaster I'd see (realistically, none of that 2012 shit)

Confirmed my flights today.

I'm flying out to Haiti on the 28th via Antigua, I'm guessing I'll be there for about 2-3 months helping out, so my big fun trip to the US is off for now. My wife is insisting on coming, she's wonderful.

I knew there'd be a day when my home region would be in need, never done anything like this before, but it's something I need to do.
