Insane air board's new role: Tire Nazis

CARB is proposing to require every repair dealer to check the inflation of every tire during repair to improve mpg for all vehicles which, in theory, is meritorious.

However (the) regs. CARB’s pushing through (released this week and subject to a 15 day comment period) ... provides that the only times that consumers may decline a check and inflate service—they can never decline the service if it’s offered for free—is when they are charged for services AND if they can PROVE (with DOCUMENTATION!) that they’ve had their tires checked and inflated in the last 30 days, or if they WILL do so within the next week. It is unclear, but possible, that CARB could take enforcement action against the consumer if they don’t follow through with their promise?!

Note that even the Department of Consumer Affairs opposed the last draft of these rules—letter attached (and I’m guessing these amendments won’t remove their opposition). CARB’s not messing around with these either—the potential penalty for violating the regulation is at least up to $1,000 per violation and six months imprisonment. The enforcement section referred to by CARB states that a violation of the regulation shall be “deemed to result in an emission of air contaminants,” potentially leading to even harsher penalties…
That's right...the Air Resources Board in California has a bill that will become law that will fine you $1,000 and up to 6 months in jail if you drive on underflated tires.  Now each time you go to get your car fixed you will need to provide proof that you have your tires inflated!!!  And if you don't the mechanic, my law, will have to report you.

Can you believe this shit:

so, er, I heard that california is a horrible place to live.

Seriously, this is beyond dumb.

From the same people that brought you the "Zero Emissions Law" then backed off, killing the EV1 program.

Its unsafe to drive with under inflated tyres. TBH they should do more in legislating people take proper care of there vehicles if they are going to drive on public roads putting other peoples lives at risk for faulty or sub standard equipment and maintenance.

Yeah, if anything this makes more sense from a safety angle. Other than the fact that it's pretty much unenforceable.

I think it's more of a scare tactic than anything else.

Well people shouldn't drive on under-inflated tyres, I guess this is just the stick to keep people on top of it.

Over-inflated tires have a smaller part of the tire on the road and thus don't allow you to corner or grip the road as well as the original manufacture specs.

Hence why you have a figure on the side of the tire that tells you what it should be inflated to. It's not hard.

Pretty much. Mechanic shops would go ballistic if they had to report their customers for stupid shit like that.

I want to report California for running on underinflated common sense.
