Right-wing blogs have been on fire of late discussing a shady new International organisation that President Obama has granted special privileges, exemptions, and immunities to, including, it is claimed, the power to investigate and even lock up U.S. citizens! No less a figure than Chuck Norris himself has taken up the conservative gauntlet in this quest for truth, going so far as to suggest that President Obama has a secret vault at Interpol's New York office in which to conceal important records about the war on terror from the American public!

What a goon that man is. Interpol, an International police agency that is aimed at sharing information and tracking criminals between borders, and Chuck Norris thinks it's an evil conspiracy. Interpol are as old as the hills and have been instrumental in tracking down dangerous criminals, including sex offenders, in the past. Why do right-wing nutcases only like fighting 'terror' when it's involves shady private organisations like Blackwater?

If I went to another country, I'd be sure to read up on the local laws, it's that simple.

Interpol was founded in the 20's anyway, not exactly new.

Everything the right wing has done since the 2008 election has been a sad spectacle, and that's coming from someone who used to support them.  What was once the party of pragmatism and responsibility is now the party of paranoia and low I.Q. voters.

Interpol is great and all however the US has its own elite police force.  So much for the O protecting and defending the constitution and the poor souls he presides over.  This guy doesn't act in the best intrests of the US.  I swear the big O see himself as a custodian or governor of the US in acting like he's jockying for President of the World.  I can't wait till he's outta office and can no longer harm my great country.  But Norris has lost it on this one though.

The US does of course have it's own elite forces and whatnot but what this special arrangement with Interpol allows for is increased sharing of intelligence and resources. It's a two-way street, Interpol get to track guys that they're after when they're on US soil and you guys get the benefit of Interpol intel and assistance when it becomes useful to ye.

Do the US not have similar agreements with countries like Pakistan and in Northern Africa, given that every couple of weeks I read about air raids here and there?

Hehe.  I'd argue the opposite.  Patriotism doesn't mean to blindly follow.  The guy is a proven liar many times over, and done many things to weaken the countries' defenses and position in the world.

I had all ready thought there was a collaboration between the agencies.  After reading the NRA's official position on the article, it was comforting to know that Interpol cannot act on US soil (apprehend/arrest).  I really need to reread the executive order.

Why not?  If someone from France murders somebody and then catches the next flight to the states, I'd want Interpol agents waiting for him, even if he is a citizen of the U.S.

Maximum cooperation between law enforcement agencies is a good thing.

It's funny how so many people found it unpatriotic and un-American when it was George Bush and his ill-considered Middle Eastern adventures that were being questioned!

I would have presumed there was some sort of agreement existing between them already, it seems like some sort of improvement on the existing agreement. As Lythberg says, increased co-operation between International law agencies is a good thing.

1) If the police were a huge force that could see everything, required everyone to check-in what they were doing, and had everyone tagged with GPS trackers then you'd see a huge drop in crime. As well as a huge drop in civil liberties.

2) That's the CIA's job.
