Ok, lately it seems I have been killed by more claymores than usual.  A lof of times, I'm left scratching my head after these deaths.  It seems the range of these claymores are ridiculous.  If the game was exactly to scale, I would say the damn things detonate when I'm 10 plus feet away.

Is the same so in real life?  I thought they were always similar to a mine, where it needed to be stepped on to detonate.  I first heard of claymores when I played metal gear solid.  To the best of my recollection you actually had to walk over them for them to detonate in that game.

Don't get me wrong, I don't much about weapons.  Christ, I'm from Canada, I've never even fired a weapon in my entire life and I'm 24 years old.

I'm just wonder if someone could shed some light on how these things actually work in real life.

According to www.globalsecurity.org:

The M18 Claymore Anti-Personel Mine is a Command-Detonated (you gotta push a clicker 3x for it to blow) shrapnel device that projects a fan-shaped area 60 degrees wide, 2m tall (at max) with a casualty range of 100m (yes, thats one hundred meters). Optimum range (balancing area affected with lethality) is 50m. Unsafe area is 250m to the front, 16m to the rear and sides of the device.

The claymore is *the* staple anti-personel mine. In case you didnt know, its *700* 10.5-grain stainless steel spheres packed in front of 1.5 lbs of C-4 plastique explosive, in an arc-shaped field.

Casualty, btw, should not be confused with Fataility. Casualty = i cant fight anymore, while Fatality = Im dead.

Yes but IRL you have to actually trigger them by breaking a wire.

In BF2 you look at a claymore, it looks at you and then removes your soul

Dude, when I was in basic training, they fired off a real claymore. The distance between the claymore and silhouette target was approximately 50 meters. When the claymore went off, it was very loud and the aftermath was devastating. The silhouette being of some sort of rock hard solid plastic material was shreaded! It was amazing the damage.

In real life, if you were hit by a claymore, there most likely wouldn't be much left for the medics to bandage up...

OOOOOOoooooooo

Triggered claymores YUM. Instead of catching 1 or 2 guys. Catch a squad.

and

OOOOOooooooooo can u say Daisy-chain. (this would have been terrible before they limited the claymores to 2. Imagine 5 claymores going off at the same time? Put them down at all the spawn points, but watch only one and when you see someone appear : blow all the claymores. That would be evil.

According to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claymore_mine, the M18A1 can be used in a Controlled (clicker triggered) or Uncontrolled (trip wire) mode.

And for those not familiar with metric measurements, 100m is 326 feet.

You can see claymores in action in the second part of the first episode of Stargate SG-1 (and other episodes).

dont you think it would be kinda cool to have triggered claymores in bf2 so in "friendly-fire on" servers you could choose when you can blow it up?

allthough its the same as C4

i think there should be an option like the m4 for example, you should be able to trigger it by detonator or have someone pas over it.  likw for your primary weapon you press 3 (if it is default) and it changes the firing mode

IMO that would be fucking asome

+1 to stargate fans

Claymores are fine the way they are, since everything in bf2 is kind of scaled down!

The maximum effective range of a claymore anti personel mine is 250 m the kill radius is 50-60 meters it can be detonated by trip wire or command wire detonated with a fireing mechanism (cracker) i only know this because i was a soldier in the brithish army and it is the only mine we can now use due to the anti mine treaty because the claymore can be manually detonated it is seen as a more humane weapon (wtf yeah rite u get shredded by 700 steel balls and then see if you think it's humane)

ha ha, ive noticed this.  Sometimes if im carefully moving into a building that i know a sniper is in, and i go up the stairway...i see about 1/4 to maybe 1/2 of the claymore, then start heading back down the stairs...only to get destroyed by it.  Why the hell does it have to taunt me like that?  It makes me think ive got a chance to get away then it changes its mind and blows my body apart.

Yup claymores are some nasty pieces in real life.  Id rather a hand grenade go off on me that a claymore.  Hand Grenade you got a chance to live....caught by a claymore....no way in hell.  Those steel balls can go through 5 human targets before they stop.  So even with a couple buddies in front of you....your still dead.  Not the case with grenades.  Nothing like a giant shotgun with C4 as its charge to kill you.

What gets me the most is when I'm moving at normal speed and I see the claymore so I stop moving, and then the damn thing waits for about a half-second before deciding to blow up.  It's like the damn thing is mocking me.
