Just put together a new computer with an AMD 4800+ x2 processor.  I also have a 7900gt card, and 2gigs of OCZ ram at 2325....

I have read of other people having this problem....

I can be in the middle of the game and it just freezes for 10 seconds....or it just stops completely and kicks me to the desktop in about 1.4 seconds!

I have heard about a Microsoft hot fix for dual core?  They want to charge me for it.....

Would this help?

anything else I can try (I have all the latest drivers).

It's posted her before. Just use imagecfg (not sure about the name). You can use it to let BF2.exe run on only 1proc. Probably fixes your problem.

I had that to, that has nothing to do with yr CPU(s). When I had my videosetting on medium I had that to, put the videosettings to high with 2x AA the problems were gone ... explain that

I had a similar problem  (of which around the forum, a lot of people seem to experiance this particular one) when like Tunacommy, the game would freeze mid round for a few seconds then crash all together with the sound looping the last 1-2 seconds, eventually outputting really corrupt sound.

I couldn't understand what was going on and thought that the recent round of patches might be causing it but this even happened on a new machine I'd built, again similar kit to Tunacommy. It's a,

1 x AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200 512k Cache per core (2.2GHz) Skt 939 Retail inc.fan (3 yr.warr.)  @ £214.50(252.04) each.
1 x Corsair® Value Select 2GB DDR PC3200 Kit (2 x 1GB) (VS2GBKIT400C3)  @ £91.80(107.87) each.
1 x Shuttle SN25P Mini Aluminium Barebone system for AMD Socket 939
1 x XFX 256Mb 7800GT @ £214.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar 320GB S150 8mb 7200rpm @ £75.99

This smashed the pants off my Tower but still this problem remained <cue anger management classes>. So I took the Bull my the horns and sent a support question to EA 19 April, of which I've not had a reply yet. The only thing similar of the two machines apart from Win OS & BF2, was that I was using AVG Anti-Virus and after 3 painfull months of Drivers, hardware, formats and general pissing around, I disabled the AV and I managed to spend 3 blissful hours kicking ass and was rewarded with a sweet Vet Sniper too ;-)

I've rambled on and seen others with a similar problem, so if this helps anyone....well then Yay!! all round.

Tunacommy is this applicable to you?

I got AVG running to ... still have it running without any probs. Maybe it's okay to kick it before playing BF2!
But i also think it has alot to do with BF2 itself and the patches. I hear alot of people are having lag problems after patch 1.2 and upwards.

Hey man - yes, I did have BitDefender running in the backround - although I disabled the NVidia firewall.  I will close out the antivirus and see if this helps.  I am hesitant to disable one of the cores - it seemed like the added core helped performance - although most people say it does not in BF2...and it did not seem to help the problem anyway.  I will disable to virus protection and see what happens.....thanks....

I am not sure if this was posted or not but I have a AMD X2 4400 and had those similiar problems. Once again I apologize if this has been posted I am at work and do not have the time to read through all the posts.. I skimmed but here is what I have for you... AMD has drivers out there just go to this link and download them and this fixed all my crashing and network disconnects:

thanks splixx....this was mentioned above and I will definately try it.  Actually, I download and installed this one last night:

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2 -

but have  not played since......

I heard that Windows has one too.....

Glad it worked for you - similar processor - hope it works for me too!

you can either use that hotfix or you can use a program called powerstrip in order to set processor affinity to one.  I have the same/similar problem thoug with my single core, so I doubt that is the cause.  Strangely enough I too have AVG installed, maybe taking that off may fix my problem :-/

This is my second day with AVG off and the crashing has not occured since I did that. Quite how that works I have no idea but at least it's another option for those with similar snags. I didn't know there was a problem with the AMD X2 and Win OS and glad it's not the problem in my case!

The hot fixes did not work completely.  I did not get dumped....but still had some freezes....damn.

I played for an hour with one of the cores turned off however and it worked fine.  so I guess I will be doing that from now on.....kind of annoying.....
